A trustee would close the position as the debt to be paid back is shares of GME. Which gets more expensive the higher the price is. If this debt can't be bought back after all assets are sold the debt is forgiven (or in chapter 11: the debt is renegotiated under court supervision).

With naked shorting the market maker hedgie effectly created an illegal (no consent) loan with a retail buyer: the hedgie provides a "share", the retail buyer provides the hedgie with money. The hedgie knows they still have to buy a real share from someone else otherwise they have illegaly diluted the stock of another company without consent and the DTCC books won't match up if the SEC/DOJ/FBI/CIA ever audits the books.
Eventually the DTCC ledger of GME shareholders and number of outstanding shares has to match. Who of the big financial players - (central) banks, (hedge)funds, FED - or the DTCC or the government provides the money to fix this fraud? This is unknown, it never happened before. All of the big financial players have played some role in facilitating the fraud - either intentionally or by not paying attention, and in the case of regulators, not doing the single thing they're supposed to do.

Maybe a law is voted in, or a court judge decides that the cost is too high to compensate these victims of fraud (victims being: shareholders of GME, including the company itself). This will create a dangerous precedent as ALL other companies on the american stock exchanges and every single stockholder in the world wants to know whether the DTCC books of their share ledgers are also fraudulent. UH OH

I’m a loser and GME is my only hope of any quality of life. I open the chart up and the stock is down my fellow GameStop investors. While there's no real legal basis for it, there's a good chance they'd step in to minimize the impact on the market. However they wouldn't just turn on the printer, they'd probably follow the same procedure as with the outstanding positions of Lehman Brothers when they went under, which was mostly solved by out-of market settlements, however some of those positions are open (and have ongoing legal battles) to this day.

That being said, how do you guys know that they are still vulnerable by a squeeze? The available data suggests that there are currently ~59m shares short, up from 54m last month, which is both far less than the float.

I know the easy answer is that they fucked with the data, but even assuming that how do you know they didn't hedge the position via futures? They could be holding a large leveraged position, which wouldn't require them to actually hold the shares, which would easily cancel out their losses by exiting both positions at the same time.
