Here's an example:

>sell covered call, 10% OTM, collect 10% premium
Now skip forward to today: that position has reversed 20%, unrealized profit now showing a 60% gain, but its now long-term status.

Ignoring taxes, it's pretty obvious this decision is a fuck up. Pocketed premium worth 20% of the unrealized profit, taxable at short-term rates. The gain itself is down 40%. That's a 20% reduction in terms of total gain.
But what if the difference in taxes is worth more than that..?

Suppose you make 300k.
>15% long-term cap gains rate
>35% short-term cap gains rate

100 x 0.65 = 65% post-tax gain
60 x .85 + 20 x .65 = 64% post-tax gain

In this particular case realizing the gain would be the better option, but barely. Going into this decision though, I think it's clear why it may be worth selling covered calls to bridge the short window between short-term gain and long-term gain, even when you think a position is likely nearing its peak, even when you have a slight downside expectation bias. Sometimes it's worth it to baghold.
