However, it does leave more room on actually profitable plays for people who aren't scared of a little risk, so hopefully more people buy into the dividend scheme.

the point of maximum pain is not that it ALWAYS pins to the maximum pain (lol) [it's laughable because this is what many beginners initially think looking at it, that it's guaranteed to go there]
it's more so that you can look at it, and look at the option activity on different strikes and get an idea of what the market is positioned for, and from looking at this information, you can get an idea by putting yourself in the shoes of the market maker
>If I were the market maker.. and I sold 100,000 $420 puts.. what would I want the market to happen
>hmm.. but I'm the market maker, and I also sold 120,000 $428 calls...
then you can get an idea that the market will want to be be pinned between 420 and 428
maximum pain the number itself is really just useful when you're using it as like an "outlier" where you're going toward an actual important expiry (this week is important for example) any 3rd Friday of any month, but especially quarterlies, and you see that maximum pain is a good distance away from the current price - this is not that the maximum pain is going to get hit, but it's just the end result number of the underlying positioning of puts and calls, that the flows from the dealers will make it more often than not trend to
so through this, you can add an extra edge to your systems, where you know if the stock price is several standard deviations away from the maximum pain, look at the put/call walls (empathize with the dealer 'what would I want to happen if I was the dealer..?') and you can better identify if will be trending up or down in the next few days / week
and I want to emphasize that it is just one tool of many, many tools - you wouldn't be like "I only use this hammer! Hammer good!" you'd also use a screwdriver when the time called for it

Nasdaq has now reached the target support level of $13k. I am hereby taking profits off the table from my QQQ puts. I am now expecting a bounce off this weak support level and into lower highs. I'm starting to feel that. I've been holding afloat in this slow decline by selling covered calls the past few months, but it's not enough. I'm getting squeezed.
It's frustrating to close out positions though. Not only the higher tax bill next April, but also the quarterly estimates for the next 4 quarters that'll follow. I was hoping this year could be a mostly-passive ride off of last October's bottom, with some small rebalances and long term profits on a few positions.

I don't think it's a fallacy either. Taxes really do matter. If I take my unrealized gains today and apply a 39% short term gains tax impact, I'm barely outperforming SPY. By smoothing my gains over time, I tend to stay in the 24% bracket, and also get some gains shifted to long term status. 6-7% state income tax either way.
Maybe if I go really aggressive one year I'd have such large gains it wouldn't even be comparable to passive holding, but there's also risk in that.
