i read the article. broad strokes.
>higher ratio of managers to workers leading to dissatisfaction
>lower overall pay due to cuts to bonuses
>frequent layoffs
and of course the nugget most people intuited
>The workers at big tech companies who report the highest job satisfaction in Glassdoor reviews aren't in technical or builder roles like engineering or science. While non-STEM roles — for instance, in human resources and marketing — can and often do contribute to cutting-edge technological innovations, they are more likely to focus on supporting and enabling the core technology.

the rest of the article goes on to explain that the technical staff are overworked, often 24/7 with no relief and attrition to coworkers. anybody who works in tech sees this: organizations depend on a few people who do decent work, burn them out, attrition hits and they lose institutional knowledge while the charlatans who play office politics become the next wave of managers too afraid to say “no,” pushing unrealistic expectations to whatever poor sap is working under them.

there is no solution. we’ll eat shit and die, techies.

Remember how everyone used to make fun of people not doing STEM degrees?
This is honestly just karma.
STEM faggots have to work 70 hour weeks and are constantly stressed out trying to find technical solutions to complex problems, just to make like $10k more than some HR roastie who cruised through college with a liberal arts degree and now watches tik tok in her office and forwards a few emails a day.
Most of the time the STEM faggots don't even get an office, they have to work in a cubicle farm like animals because it's more "collaborative." Lol.

I'm sobbing for them. Hope Marlin adopts some piece of shit AI to come out with Oyster sooner, their programmers are unironically "i work 30 mins a week from home as a dev" tier. Fuck them and fuck programmers in general.

Is it still worth it to learn how to code if the brutal reality is that some HR roastie gets to boss me around while practically contributing nothing to the company while I'm forced to do all the grunt work for the company, have to meet deadlines and live a really stressed life 24/7? Why not just learn plumbing and say fuck it instead?

feel like basic computer literacy would replace me, then I realize how insane that statement is and get real comfortable again. they keep hiring women that don't know how to use outlook. H_R guy was freaking out sending me emails. "Do you have unconsented access to my pc?!?!" Uh yes, I am cis admin I have access to everything. If I wanted to I could look at any data in the entire company and upload it to dem_bois_chan. I could also drive a fucking car through your house. The possibilities of what I can do are staggering.

Good. I am a software dev and i hate what happened over the past 5 years in particular.

Everyone who isn’t a software dev expects you to make $300,000 a year and be a certain way.
Big tech roles have become some default expectation on what people expect software engineers to be.

It has been annoying as fuck. If it reverts to how it was before where it is just a decently paid white collar job like many others , but nothing particularly special then i’ll be glad.

It is not just tech industry. That is ANY large company. 50% of workers just do minimum to get salary, 10% do the same while cock sucking and taking credit for others to get management positions, and 20-40% of the workers do work hard and get everything done often beyond their base expectations for a salary.

Companies naturally organise that way and it cannot be stopped. Some over worked type A scared to lose their job will always exist and do more than they need due to that. They are the work horses.

This is why i chose to work for myself as freelance. I actually get out what i put in.

I'd say it's worth learning because it gives you options, either working for a company or starting your own.
idk why you have that impression of HR, I literally never interact with them unless I'm doing interviews or getting a promotion, they certainly don't boss me around. This is white collar work, not a factory line.
It's pretty comfy, I work at a mid-tier tech company although the pay isn't great, for my area it pays below average household but above median household income as a "senior" developer, so I'd be well above typical salaries if I had a gf that worked but nowhere near FANG levels. Nobody watches over you to make sure you're on task, nobody cares just as long as you get things done and aren't completely goofing off the whole time. I see interns that watch tiktok on their phones for half the day in cubicles next to their manager. I close my laptop at 5pm and don't even check my work emails until 9am the next day. Deadlines aren't even a big deal, work is broken down into 2-3 week sprints and that work can be split up across multiple sprints if you think it will take more time, hard deadlines are usually set months in advance so testers have time to test it too.

Guess plumbing can pay pretty well too, can transition that into your own business and have as much growth as you put into it, starting out will probably suck though. Being on someone's schedule and having to get to each location and getting paid by the hour or job is its own kind of suck, I couldn't imagine going back to that kind of work after I've had the freedom to leave or come in late or take off in the middle of the day for something like an eye/dentist appointment. At any of my previous jobs I'd have to take time off or get a warning if I just left for an hour or have to go through a whole process, while right now it's just do whatever and get your work done.
