I'm going all out.

When you buy a bond ETF you "lock in" the rate so to say, and even though you don't lock in like you would if you bought the bond itself, depending on the duration you do to an extent.

Let's say you bought $100 of a ten year bond fund yielding 5%. If the interest rate goes down by 1% then your bond fund will increase to $110 and that new fund will be yielding 4%. But you didn't buy your shares when it was $110, you bought it when it was $100. So for you, it would be $110 * 4% = $4.4 / $100 = 4.4%. This works with any number as well
>39$ at 5% -> rates drop by 1% so it increases by 10% -> $42.9 * 4% = $1.716 / $39 = 4.4% yield
The longer the duration and the higher the yield the more extreme this gets. This is bond convexity. If you buy a 20 year bond fund when rates are 5% and then it falls to 4% you get
>$100 at 5% -> rates drop by 1% so it increases by 20% -> $120 at 4% = $4.80 / 100 = 4.8%

It works with tips too. Right now the 20 year tips bond is at 2.51% and LTPZ has an average duration of 20 and is $51. If rates fall back to 1.5% then it'll raise to $61.2. And you'll barely be getting 1.8%. Kinda sucks right? That's what happens because rates are already low.

But here's the kicker, it works with inflation too. Let's say while rates are 1.5% that inflation is 2.5% (lol, we all know its going to be higher). It's going to pay out 2.5% for that current high $61.2. But if you bought it today at $51, then that comes out to 3% inflation payout. Inflation for tips bond etfs causes real returns if the NAV increases after you buy it.

The high for LTPZ was $92. If you bought it today and it got to that point, you'd be getting payouts of inflation times 1.8. Remember when inflation was 8%? You'd get 14.4%, that's 6.4% real returns above inflation, regardless of the actual fucking real return aspect of it.

This makes sense too, if you compare different TIPS ETFs the longer duration ones paid out way fucking mroe

(applies to a certain year range; my hire date falls within that). But still it's not bad. Sick time rolls up and can be used as time counted towards retirement. Even gotta handy chart that'll convert it for you (3000hrs = 1 year). Vacation time rolls up to up to a certain amount. They let you carry so much then whatever is over that gets dumped into your sick time. It also grows as your years pass. By the time your at 20 years your racking up 2 whole days a month of vacation time plus the paid holidays, etc you get. Also the dollar value of unused vacation time can be used as a 401k boost/catch up option when your at retirement. Or they pay you for it but you get taxed at a higher rate if you do that.

I wish I'd got on with the state right after high school. Or at any point before June 2003. After June 2003 they changed the health benefit you got when you retired. Before the change basically you put in your time, you retire, and the state would pickup the cost of health insurance 100% till you went on fed govt dime at 65. Which a full retirement could start at 27 years. Ex: You start at age 19. You'd be retired at age 46. For me, I can still retire at 27 years but the health benefit switched to a dollar contribution amount. So they toss so much per month for health coverage with the difference getting taken out of my pension check. The rub; health costs suck now, it'll suck even more by the time retirement rolls around. The other rub; it's actually fucking cheaper to work far as the health coverage goes. Get the trifecta for me and the Wife (vision/dental/medical) for only $370-380 a month taken out my check.Once retirement day hits that cost skyrockets unless you do the 3rd option; get your own health plan and use the health stipend they give you to help cover the costs. (When I was a single dude I got the trifecta and it cost me just $50 a month)

if you get a job paying 100k a year and save 3k a month (very doable, i save more than that on 110k a year) then that's 130k after 3.5 years. That means you have 6.5 years to go to university and pay off your loans.

To avoid getting rekt when the market dumps I'd suggest a trend following methodology. Since it's volatility based you could use that as the signal to buy or sell. Here it is: open the VIX6M/VIX chart on the daily time frame. If the 4pm close is below 1.15 buy when the market opens at 9:30am the next morning. If the close is below 1.15 sell at 9:30am the next morning. You could use 1.2 as well. This is just an example though. I'm sure you can do some backtesting and come up with something better. Look at VIX3M/VIX too

I'm retarted. That should be if the ratio is at or above 1.15 buy the next morning. Sell if it's below. Also, FWIW, backtesting shows 1.2 to be better. I should go to bed now

What's the risk of buying the stock and selling a CC on inflated IV? I suppose it could drop in value, but the gains offered by writing the option should ideally offset that. You'd be delta neutral, though gamma would affect it.
But then you could be elaborate and hedge the gamma with a calendar spread, but then you're going to eat transaction fees

I did that for a little bit. It is very capital inefficient due to 2 day settlement time for stock. If you want to do that short vol into earnings strat (I wouldn't recommend it) selling puts into earnings accomplishes the same thing with the faster 1 day options settlement.

Why do people here want some kind of a big crash? The economy is doing great, the job market is alright, good quality stocks are as strong as ever... why would you want a crash? Didn't you buy last year?
People make it out to seem like the market is on some sort of an irrational high but it makes sense that the big seven and most other quality stocks are either at ATH or hovering near ATH. Small caps and others that have a big exposure to the high rates are getting kekked. Some tech really is overvalued though (AMD for example) but that is still kind of understandable

I accidentally did that with a calendar spread once and ate a 70% loss on the trade, was not fun.

Separate from all that, my last option trade was a bull put spread on XLF. I entered 2x
-37P/+35P on Sept 15th for a Oct 13th(?) exp. At the time I believe that I thought there was a bullish case for $37 and this would be a safer spread to trade. Got $340 upfront, next day it gapped down and I got early assigned. Had to do $7400 on margin and paid interest on it for 2-3 days before I realized that even if I was right, because I didn't have the cash on hand I'd be eating fees and it was better to just exercise my 35P, sell for $7000 and have a net $60 loss (plus fees).

The high premium will help eat cost if earnings leads to increased IV. When the IV reverts again your CC will most likely remain bearish. USB has a 38% IV in the 73% percentile so it's definitely going to revert pretty drastically after earnings unless they defy expectations

Markets can be frustrating. The fucked thing is no matter what you do there is luck involved, e.g. if you had a long equities strat and started out in 2010 you looked like a genius for 10 years straight. Will it work like that the next 10 years? Nobody knows. In the long run there are some things that seem plausibly axiomatic. Stocks go up more often than down for reasons. Government intervention, corporate efficiency, 401k investors dumping money in monthly, etc. So that said your strategy should take stocks going up into account which means you should favor being long. That's the bedrock. Add to that some uncorrelated stuff like options selling, maybe iron condors, calendar spreads, broken wing butterflys on volatility ETPs.
In short, trend follow equities with a long bias. Pick your poison for signals, moving averages, volatility, breakouts, whatever. Just have a system that backtests well and follow it religiously. I'd say run that with maybe 3/5 of your portfolio. With the other 40%, use a systematic premium farming strategy. Sell iron condors on SPY. Look for situations where SPY is in some kind of range or whatever. As long as it isn't going straight up or down. In that situation definitely don't open an iron condor just to get stopped right out. You want a some amount of volatility so your wings won't be too close together. Maybe look for IV rank at least above 15%. Look for deltas .15 or below on the short legs and open 30-45 days out. Take profit when you're up 50% and stop yourself out if you lose 15% of the premium you received when opening the trade. Never ever let your iron condor go until you reach maximum loss. Always stop out. If IV rank is below 15 consider opening a calendar instead since they are positive vega. And look >>56382878 and >>56382868 for my thoughts on UVXY broken wing butterflys. Just some suggestions. Remember, consistency is key. You are most likely to abandon a strategy right before it makes the biggest profit

There's that tail risk that I don't like. Every time I've tried something, I get blindsided by something I hadn't considered. Last thing I want to do is set up a strategy that "can't lose unless X happens" and then have it happen

When I was trading biotechs last month, I went long 3 weeks before their PFUDA dates, did 1% risk and scaled by the ATR. Risk was good. Looked at my total ATR x quantity exposure among all open trades, and bought 1/3rd that in LABD. More or less broke even, was up by about $70 at one point but finished down $60. I think the idea was to more or less hedge myself and benefit from positive tail risk on event data.

I think I could probably do that with SQQQ or shorting a spider sector etf on company ERs. I'll have to figure that out though

I'm a big proponent of risk management and trade psychology and agree on being consistent.

If you flip a coin (going long on heads and short on tails), you should be right approximately 50% of the time. Let's say you have an indicator that gives you a baseline or confirmation and you can avoid 1-2 bad trades and that pushes your win rate to 51% - you are now longterm profitable.

Another thing is cutting losers and letting winners run. If you have a perfect 50% winrate, your distribution on individual trades should be a bell curve. If you hold losers and cut winners, you shift the bell curve to negative ROI%. If you consistently avoid bad entries, cut losers, manage risk and let winners run, you shift the bell curve to positive ROI% for free. It's all about managing trades.

The problem is that while I understand this and have started doing this with biotechs (as mentioned >>56383040), it's not quite profitable yet. In aug/sept I did 10 trades (1 option) and was down $300. Of that $300, I paid $110 in fees, $60 on the option loss. If I avoided that trade entirely, I'd have cut my losses in half. So avoiding things like that. Sept/Oct was much better - $140 in fees, but only a net $60 loss so far.

Yeah it took a while and some big losses to finally hammer this into my head. Now I ruthlessly cut losses and resist the urge to sell winners. Sounds like you have the right mindset and a systematic strategy. You probably are just having a rough patch. It'll pass and you'll start making money

I fuck around with my own indicators on TradingView too. I watch NNFX on YT. One thing I want to try is my own volume/volatility indicator.

In particular, if a stock is crabbing in a range, candles also have a fairly consistent height. That means volatility is going down. If a candle breaks out of the range, the only way it can maintain a low volatility is if the candle size itself also decreases. Eg, a small candle breaking the range doesn't matter. In other words, increasing volatility means a trend is forming and it is breaking out from the sideways range. An increase in average volume can also confirm this.

I also like to look at ATR as a % of closing price. I find that tickers that are less than 1.5% tend to take up a huge amount of capital in order to maintain a 1-2% risk position size, while stuff in the 2-6% ATR are plenty volatile and I only need to post like 20% of my account in a position to get a proper trade in, which means more concurrent trades (great if I'm winning). I find that more than 8-10% ATR tends to get extremely volatile and tends to get closed very quickly unless you have a different approach (eg, sizing for 0.5% risk but then doubling your SL)

Yes, most of the time if you buy the dip on good stocks, especially low volatility mega blue chips like PEP, UNH, WM, ROL, etc. you will profit in the long run. But as you say I'm an active trader trying to beat the market. Think about it like this: if I buy a stock or ETF and it goes up I make money. If I don't have stops I make lots of money. If I have a stop loss and it triggers occasionally I still make plenty of money just not quite as much. If the stock goes down and I don't have a stop loss I lose an indeterminant amount of money for an indeterminant amount of time. It could be a small amount or it could be a whole lot for a long time. However if I have a stop I just lose a little money and then I can redeploy that money into something else while somebody else is holding my former bags.
In short if stocks go up I make money no matter what. If they go down I lose a little bit. Without a stop I lose a lot. Hence I use stops. In effect letting winners run and cutting losers short

To add to this, every strategy has to be one you can live with and it has to fit into your own context. For some people stop losses fill them with anxiety. They get stopped out then the price turns around and they feel bad. They would have been better off psychological just holding onto the losing trade until eventually it turned around. Some people are wired that way. I'm wired such that I prefer to get out of something that's not going my way and get back in when it turns around. It makes me feel good like I "beat the system". It's fun and I can stick with it. I can't stick with holding trades that are going down. Depending on the market environment I may or may not make more money in the long run but it works and it makes me feel better. It helps me stick to my system and make money which is probably the most important thing

I can see why people find covered calls compelling, I tend to avoid them though. Especially as part of a trend following strategy. Consider the facts of trend following. It's a strategy with a higher percentage of losing trades than winning trades yet still profitable since the big winners way more than make up for any losers. However covered calls can end up sabotaging the big trend winners. As soon as a big trend takes off your shares get called away and you miss it. Conversely, there is lots of room for options trading you can pair up with your trend following that doesn't hurt your gains and isn't correlated at all so it can help when your trend following hits a draw down. Opening broken wing butterflies on VXX for example. Or iron condors on SPY and QQQ. The upshot is you really do want option strategies that avoid capping your trend following gains. Covered calls look good because they are easy to understand and implement. They will hurt your gains though. Also, when I mentioned WM I meant Waste Management

They are a risk free "investment"? You could give your money to a bank for return, but banks often have lower rates than states (look at states with less credit rating). But I still might trust a state more than a bank. Also, other than an account @ bank you can trade bonds by selling. So if you buy when yields are high and yields fall again, you could sell them at profit. They are like a mix of a fixed rate bank account (sorry I don't know the international or US term for it, but I mean an account at bank for which they pay you interest on a fixed rate for a fixed time), and stocks as you can sell them again because they can change their value. As if you were selling your bank account contract to another person

financial assets compete with one another for investor money. why would you buy a stock(or the index) if a risk free asset called a bond yields 5%-10%? it would mean the stock would need to outperform the bond because stocks dont guarantee returns, while bonds generally do(its a loan that is paid back).

bonds are considered safer and as investors age they want more bonds. when the 10 year treasury goes up in yield, it becomes more attractive to investors. the 100 year sp500 average return is 9%. imagine if lending the government money for 10 years gave you 9%(remember they own the money printer and have never failed to pay back bond holders). that would mean, there would be less demand for stocks, which would put downward pressure on stock prices. this is how bond yields/interest rates affect asset prices, not just stocks.

Stocks go up when people buy stocks. However if people sell stocks to lock in a guaranteed 5% gain with bonds stocks will go down. Lots of people find that 5% a compelling alternative. As yields rise the number of stock sellers and bond buyers will increase. Take into account too the number of investment advisers that will steer investors into these increasing yields and away from stocks

But youd also be paying a borrowing fee for the stock, say 4%. Suppose the bond pays 6.5%. Now youre hold all that weight to have a guaranteed 2.5%, at which point just buy a treasury. The only real situation that feels good is if you want a slow burn on a company that you feel is insolvent. But then something like GME or BBBY has an extremely high borrow cost.

Also what bonds you buying? I buy fixed income with TD. Got a couple monthly banker acceptance at 4.9%

Arbitrage. Risk free guaranteed returns.
It exploits market inefficiencies and often exists for minutes (or seconds) at a time and needs 6-7 figure trades to profit from it. HFT are a consequence of this.
It makes the market more liquid and is literally why "priced in" exists as a concept

>borrowing fee
Yeah, that is right. Didn't think of that as the CFD-brokers I use pay you interest for shorting because of the high central bank rates. They have a different formula.

I bought romanian and spanish bonds. The spanish I sold again, because I expect EU yields (not romanian though) to spike later this year or early 2024, so I would buy them again, hopefully at the same price I initially bought or cheaper.

That reminds me, I have access to CFDs (and up to 500:1 leverage, lol). Anyways I saw currencies pay you if the interest spread is in your favor
But other stuff like metals, zinc had a positive cost if long, negative if short, and nickel had negative long and positive short
Then crypto cfds had a negative carry cost if long or short

Is it possible the global economy is shrinking and the stock market has not caught up yet?

>>56383325
If large companies like Verizon need to refinance because they have a certain amount of debt on variable rate of interest with the likelihood of the FED raising rates we could see bankruptcies and massive layoffs. This will lead to an uptick in unemployment claims, more government spending, and a tightening of private sector spending. This could be rough for 2024

I got a trading competition(virtual money) coming where I got 3 weeks to make gains on any stocks in the SP500. I can only buy and sell, no shorting or margins. No options stuff. I'm trying to think of the best strategy. Obviously has to be high risk high reward. Past winners have all made around 30%-50%. Right now I'm thinking of trying to play earnings calls. Just read as much news as I can, read what the company executives are saying, how they are acting to try and get info that way. I reckon if I get lucky and get 7% pumps 5 times during that 3 week period, I might win it. I'm thinking maybe some military stocks are worth looking into and commodities related stuff. Small cap obviously better for riskier plays.

I also wonder how wild the earnings are compared to previous years since there has been a lot of uncertainty in the air which should provide for some nice volatility.
