Read a broker agreement if you don't have one due to never opening an account. When you do margin trading of any kind(options, shorts, etc) You have entered into a strict agreement to not only provide adequate margin and collateral. Now If according to him he can exit at $25 and it'l hurt, then he's probably doing something right. The real doom scenario for a retail short is you a) do not have the shares to just fucking close it b) cannot acquire the shares on the market with either cash or margin and c) cannot get the extra collateral to return the margin to finally get out. It gets really bad from here if you're truly underwater as your broker may not allow you to do any automated trading and they control your account. Which some brokers may do this, close the short now you're on the hook for what they did for you.
