Depends. If the multiple is cheaper than that of the acquirer, then the end result is positive. Debt can also change the math. Cost synergies can help, but most managements will bullshit about potential synergies to justify an acquisition whether they truly exist or not.
A good example of a serial acquirer is Constellation Software. The stock screens expensive yet as they continue to acquirer small businesses the stock has compounded. It's somewhat ponzi-like as you'd probably rather just hold the cheaper stocks in the first place, yet the tax efficiency and convenience of longterm holding in a stock like this makes it viable. There are limits to growth, though - a stock which outperforms the greater market and does not return capital will eventually find it controls the whole market. At that point, outperformance becomes impossible. Berkshire Hathaway has probably reached this point.

High ROIC is definitely a key driver of longterm outperformance, but I feel like this is often only visible in hindsight. Plenty of people will buy shit like TWLO on the basis of massive continuous growth, but then profitability never comes. On the other hand, some internal investment are put into projects that do not translate to anything immediately visible. You really need to trust the vision and execution. So I tend to prefer outright value.

It is a hierarchy of general longterm appreciation potential. Of course there are certain times where as a trade it may make sense to hold anything, even cash.
But if you're going to buy some collectable at random, the odds are that you will underperform someone buying a basket of quality stocks. These odds increase with duration. All else equal, you are better off holding stocks.
Some people may time flips well and make money above this average, but others will also overpay and baghold for a while and underperform. This outperformance is zero sum.

Much of the growth comes from compounding the profits. If you have a stable business and it earns money over some timeframe and then pays it out, you still hold the residual company which may be worth as much as it initially was. This is a real return. i theorize that since we are all atomic matter, once we die, we will be consumed by the earth, either directly by bugs and whatnot (who will thereby be feeding other bigger bugs and so on in food chain) or we will end up one with the earth, replenishing its minerals after millions of years of decomposing, to be used as raw energy for whatever it might need. therefore, we never truly die but are reborn somehow trough the actions of living beings that use said energy. but i know shit about physics so i understand i am likely wrong.
