Black Monday was largely caused by early algorithmic trading that entered a death spiral, each move down was interpreted as an increasingly bearish for the algos and so they would sell, triggering further selling.

In response to this flash crash type scenario, they implemented limit downs, think it is at 7%, where trading becomes closed for a couple of hours.

Also, Blackmonday was indeed a choking event at the time, but it was overall a non-event, it recovered most of the flash crash the following days, and the next year it was back to all time high.

i don't know enough about black monday or about the algorithms and trading and all that to make much of an intelligent comment on this however i can tell you that a lot of smart people were saying that the algorithms and computers and programs are too complex to be trusted and that they are dangerous and can cause a lot of damage and problems for the economy
