according to cpi inflation calculator 275 dollars is equivelant of 947.61 today
minimum wage was 3.35 in 1981 which was equivalent of 11.50 an hour today
1981 was also around the end of a massive massive recession with double digit interest rates and the begining of the end for manufacturing jobs all over the usa and amazingly enough it is is seen as some sort of golden age because rose tinted glasses and because things today are much worse than back then. but it seems that 275 bucks in 1981 was a pretty high rent and probably outside the average rental costs back then
