It feels like minimalism and frugality are a cope for former middle class people unsure of where they stand financially. They want to look like they don't care about material possessions, but only someone who has seen the abyss of materialism could come back to be able to so easily embrace what most see as miserly behaviors. Both poor and rich people respectively do not care about hiding their money, but the middle class, full of terminally anxious, overworked, spiritually lost individuals, are ostensibly forced into a position where they must adopt some skewed, misinformed idea of asceticism, since just meditating or saying you think Buddhism is kinda cool is now cringeworthy. Ironically minimalism and minimal expenditures are more fruitless than the ignorance of living paycheck to paycheck, because it's all vanity at the end of the day, deisgned to literally put skeletons in one's closet for the vague affect of a clean, spick and span lifestyle free of want, yet rife with trauma.
