I have some aspron/billon trachys but they're pretty weird coins, they're a distinct numismatic curiosity but I've never found them attractive or appealing, and at less than 1000 years old they're practically still babbys so not too interesting either. I do like the earlier Byzantine coins struck under Anastasius, Justin I, and Justinian The Great, especially the big bronze "Follis" denomination coins, and would recommend you also look for 5th-6th century coins if you want some Byzantine pieces you'll actually enjoy.

Hello frogbro, yeah that's exorbitant, you can buy trachys all day long for under $15 each because there isn't much demand for the things. Maybe wait for a nice cheap one (and only one) to have as an example, but even though mine were all dirt cheap I kinda regret getting them.

If you want an *extra* goofy coin, here is an ~18 gram bronze imitation of a Constantinople mint Anastasius Follis, I believe made by some flavor of Gothic or eastern Germanic Gepid tribe in the early 500s during the migration period. It's one of the most crazy barbarous imitative coins I've seen up for auction so I paid decent money for it (still less than that lame 70€ trachy and much less than its value of course). I get great joy and intellectual stimulation from fondling and contemplating this relic of the mysterious "dark-age" migration period. I could smash all my trachys with a hammer and send them to the refinery for melting and feel far less pain than I would if merely dropped this Gothic/Gepidic imitative follis and put a little ding on its rim. You want to go for coins that are truly meaningful and interesting to you my fren, it's always better to have 1 fascinating $100 coin than 10 boring niggardly $10 coins, you'll never regret aiming for quality over quantity.

One recommendation I can give is that I've seen gluts on the market of otherwise quite rare coins from hoards or big collections and while the market is oversaturated you can get some good deals. I'm not sure what is going on with the pattern coins but if there is an unusually large volume of them then you should probably invest in any that are going unusually cheap, once the glut of patterns dries up prices will eventually rise again.

These days anyone who even bothers hunting rolls for silver anymore sticks to half dollars. You could try taking up metal detecting as a hobby which is fun albeit not usually lucrative, and if you live in an old area with old stormwater sewer drains which carry rainwater from the streets into nearby creeks or ravines you can sift the gravels around the outflow for old coins and jewelry that fell down street drainage grates and got washed through over the years. I found all this stuff from just 1 storm drain, it's pretty fun but like detecting not typically lucrative.

A good start anon, if you want to hunt pennies I recommend asking your bank to buy the $50 bags of cents from their coin sorting machine. They often don't like providing boxes of rolled pennies because they lose money on them and just have them as a courtesy for their business clients, but buying the bags from their machines actually helps save them money (transportation to coin rolling facilities ain't free) so they'll be much more interested in providing them.

Mercs are great with recognition, so I'd go for those and Washingtons for weight, get a couple walking halves to look at. If you only have a few hundred to spend get 50 mercs and 100 Washingtons, or however you want to slice it. I'd focus a variety. It is the spice of life after all

PA would be near the top of my list for places that would be ideal for storm drain sifting. You need a screen and something to scoop gravel into the screen, and a "miners' lamp" flashlight to wear on your head if you feel adventurous and want to go deep inside, but it's pretty easy and low tech.

So about my story.. today i sold a coin for close to 300 bux, among others.
I went to the post office to send it with insurance + tracking. The way it work here is you first pay your stamp at the automaton, glue it on the envelop, then go to the cashier where they add their tracking stamp, give you the proof of deposit slip and bip the envelop.

Thing is, they took my envelop, didn't check it nor added the tracking stamp. I was in a rush with many envelops and sadly didn't notice they fucked up because i was filling others slips in the meantime.
Once back home, when i wanted to fill the tracking number on ebay i noticed i didn't have the slip. So i rushed back to the post office, and told them about the mishap. Thankfully i take pics of every stamped envelops before posting them, so the QR code, pricing and receipt were on my phone.

They started to search for the envelop, but it was already gone for the dispatching center. And since they didn't *bip* the stamp nor added any tracking, the thing is basically impossible to find back. I started to REE as they were apologizing. They made some phone calls left and right but no way to find it.

That's what i fear the most. If he claims he only received the empty one, i'd have no way to tell if he's lying or not, even though the director told me there is 98% chances the machine will try to deliver it at the buyer's address. But i know i'll be too honest and take the loss on me if the buyer falsely claim he received nothing to jew me. I think the Mexibros may have it best though, they had bimetallic sterling silver center coins struck for circulation from 1992-1995 and they can still be found floating around there, pretty wild to think about.

Yes of course, I save lots of different items and patterns, there are plenty of sterling silverware items that are worth quite more than melt so if you have a large variety you'll need to take some time to look at ebay sold item prices for each pattern or article that looks potentially desirable. I took a quick look and it seems like 4-piece place settings in the Chippendale pattern sell for $140+shipping, estimating ~20g of sterling in the knife handle and weighing the other 3 pieces will give you solid figures to work with, but at ~4ozt asw per place setting even after ebay fees you would pocket more than spot. The refinery takes a cut of silver too so at the current prices Dad's probably right that the Chippendale pieces are best kept intact.
