I'm new to silver but I inherited a small stack of collectables.
Should I take them to a coin merchant for valuation, or just estimate value by mass of silver?

there might be; but it just depends on if you trust your local coin shop to be honest with you.

if you don't have some sort of relationship with one (ie, you stop by once a week or once a month); if not, then they'll probably low-ball you.

you can just look up stuff yourself if you have the time.

So my old lady wants to (((get married))) now that I put a baby in her. I bought this when I first started stacking and I've decided to take the rounds route so good for her, I'm gonna melt this sumbitch. I should probably get another bar to melt to make a ring, eh? The bitch said she specifically wants a dark red rock for the ring so I think that saves me like 50% vs a diamond. Hate to expose my not lurking pmg for two years before posting, but in the past month I've seen reposts and that means you niggers are poor and niggers darker than me. I was thinking delft clay for the molding. I've never done anything like metal melting before but I understand bondo.

I bought it because it is cool looking, not really for an investment. The gold I own is not gold backs. I will be buying mostly silver; I want to get to 200oz with some gold purchases in-between.
I do like the gold/silver backs though simply because they are beautiful.
I think next paycheck I will pick up a few 2oz silver Egyptian silver rounds, the one with the snakes is nice and throw in another gold back.

After the czech lion and slovak eagle coins, I found another one! How did Niue ever get in on this deal, considering the Ceska Republika has its own mint? Why can't they even bother to issue their own silver coins?
> Introducing a new silver coin from the Czech Mint. The reverse which is the work of designer Ladislav Vraný and medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek, presents three Jáchymov thalers. On the obverse side you will find a trio of US dollars. This is the motif of the very first coins minted by the United States in 1794, which borrowed not only the name but also the weight and purity of the metal used from their Czech ancestor. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, their obverse side you will still find its necessary attributes - the national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.

The main gist I kinda understand is that it's a more solid / "material" way to hold onto and accrue value.
On that note is Silver worth it? Or should you all in on gold? Or should you diversify? Diversifying seems like the smart option but that's just how it looks to me.

The gubment can't print gold and silver. Simple as. Federal debt accrued by over 10 trillions since 2020. The M2 money supply by a third.
It's almost impossible to describe how fucked the situation currently is.

I've been playing a game called Kingdom Come: Deliverance and the economy is interesting. They have their standard game currency (that are supposedly silver coins), but lightweight silver and gold items (silver rings, golden chalices, etc) are always worth hundreds of coins. When I'm selling junk to traders, they tend to run out of game currency to trade me for all the weapons and armor that I'm giving them, so i use the aforementioned lightweight silver/gold items for barter. I sold some of these to them earlier and then I get them back when they don't have enough coin to pay me for the junk I'm giving them and I can always count on selling these silver/gold items to other traders for lots of coins later on. I really enjoy this mixture of currency and silver/gold bartering

Well, budget your NEETdom first and foremost : how much do you need to survive each month? If you don't have rent to pay and minimal bills (strict minimum being internet+insurances+phone+taxes+electricity/water..), i suppose you could survive in monk style with no fancy food for a little over a year with 16k.
Which isn't much, so you better start trying to look at all kind of gibs you can apply to ASAP, considering your file could (and will) take over a year before you get an answer.

Do you have any alternative source of income? Any hobby or talent you could try to monetize? But before incomes, your priority is to cut down on any unnecessary spendings. If you have a dog, you abandon it now. If you have amazon prime or goyflix, you cancel it now. NEETdom is a permanent war against expenses.

>Quite fitting and great work frogbro!
Thx Scrapfren. It shouldn't be too hard to sell them a tiny bit above spot, it's from Christofle, probably the most well-known luxury brand for tableware in France, alongside Puiforcat.
It's them who introduced electroplating in France, and were supplying most royal courts of Europe in silverware.
>The company became famous after Emperor Napoleon III ordered a 4,000-piece service
>and to be solicited by foreign sovereigns such as the Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, the Tsar of Russia, the German Kaiser, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Sultan Abdülaziz of the Ottoman Empire.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christofle

They then started to target a larger public during the XXth c. by making more affordable pieces for the high end middle class. But depending on how old is the set, it could fetch a pretty comfy premium, especially if it's mid-XIXth c., i'll have to dig on that.

> I spent several hours today sorting through some big boxes of silverplate and jewelry I've accumulated
Is it the left over from when you order lots who contain both silverplate and silver, but you only are interested in the silver?

> about a half kilo of amateur jewelry-maker bits which aren't marked but seem like good sterling
I got this issue too, especially with religious medals and pendants, for some reason a good chunk of those aren't marked.
Something peculiar too is i've got complete sets where not all the pieces have hallmarks. It's pretty evident they all are in silver, but somehow here and there the customs forgot to stamp one or two pieces from the set. I've a 25 liquor goblets set + silver platter like this, only 23 have hallmarks. Same for few pocket watches. Did it already happen to you?

> plus a 4.8g golden tie clip with a faint hallmark that really looks like "14K" which is exciting

I've no clue wtf happened but my ass-long post answering you disappeared..
Too lazy to type it all over again, but thanks for the tips fren.
It was mostly to tell you the giant flea market i go to is organized by a charity, who collect stuff offered by people all over France in local branchs, and everything sold is used to replenish food banks across the country.
So there is not much haggle possible, since it's ginormous quantities of stuff who is only sold by the weight/unity.
For example all books are at 50c, no matter if it's a 17th c. encyclopedia or a shitty people magazine. Same goes for tableware, it's sold like 2€/kg for metallic ones, 1.50€/kg for dishes, and everything is displayed in big trays, and you pick what you want.

Emmaus (the charity's name) is often used when people die and relatives don't know what to do with all the stuff, and/or don't want to bother with emptying the house before putting it on sale. They simply call a local branch, and a team of volunteers shows up and clean the house ENTIRELY lol. My mom did that after my gramp died for example, it's pretty common.
This is why i believe it's the best kind of place to find sick deals, because it's not "boomers who know what they got", it's literally dead people stuff or richfags giving out to a charity. No way there is not some treasure hidden!

Here is how you invest in gold stocks. You ready? You ready? I'm gon' save y'all some time from reading this book, but you gotta mind me well. Y'all bout to get learned today.

The answer to buying gold stocks, is to monitor /GC (gold futures) on the daily/weekly and dollar cost average into your favorite stocks for the foreseeable future until this MASSIVE cup and handle move plays out. This is the largest set-up that has played out in my lifetime, and I am not sure that many of us will be alive to see it play out because it's going to take YEARS.

If the handle breaks down, expect to not see any returns on gold stocks in your life time. If it does play out, then congratulations, you waited 10 years to earn a 2x, which is not acceptable to me, but it might be acceptable to some boomers (lol).

And these are the best case scenarios because if they were to somehow squeeze insanely in a short period of time then you'd get windfall taxed, or get your positions reversed like the recent nickle trade of 2 years ago.

Look at the overall marketcap for gold compared to other assets.

Oh, here it is.

So ask yourself, how much money do you think you need to print in order to push up the price of gold to a 10x given that it's already the most expensive asset in the world?

Silver is at 1.3T, so surely that's a better investment right?

Maybe things get more interesting if you look at palladium and platinum, do you know if there's any possible narrative for those?

Of course, 95% of the time I only buy coins or precious metal articles when the price is low enough that I could immediately sell it for a profit. If you think like a dealer and buy low then gains come naturally, if you are just a coomsoomer paying premiums and retail prices then that profit is rather more difficult to come by.

I've only seen the silverplated Christofle articles IRL, but even as an uncultured burgerlard I know it's a very popular brand so if you learn that your spoons are uncommonly old or of a rare pattern then I'm sure autistic Christofle collectors will be particularly interested, definitely a good purchase man. Regarding my plated leftovers, yes it's just crap that I tossed in a box (and then other boxes after the first got full) from mixed lots of good sterling and plated items. I hate messing with tangled and tedious jewelry but actually sat down and finished sorting it all today and found yet more sterling plus a few nuggets of 14k gold. And regarding your question about not all items of the same set having hallmarks I also have encountered this. For some reason only one of 2 earrings in several pairs of karat gold earrings I've found have been hallmarked, and on older pre-1868 American sterling silverware sometimes just a few of a matching batch of spoons or forks will actually be appropriately hallmarked "STERLING" or have the relevant non-standard hallmarks used by that company or in their region. And with stuff like older ~.900 Coin silverware a complete lack of any marks indicating purity or quality of silver was the norm. The lack of purity hallmarks combined with look-alike plated items makes it extra confusing for normoids but a great angle for the more experienced to scoop up deals. We may be doing well but there is always more for us to learn, let's keep sharpening our skills and hoarding those cheapies my fren.

It's a little sterling silver "Salt Cellar" from Norway, a rather popular and thus common mid-20thC. design which was made by several Scandinavian silversmiths, but in spite of being relatively common they sell for more than typical salts when titled/advertised correctly. Larger viking ship "master salts" are even cooler. There are also "drinking horn" pepper shakers, here is a full personal place-setting set that is a shit deal but will give you a good idea for the aesthetic:

>I've only seen the silverplated Christofle articles IRL
Yes, ever since they started to target the middle class, 95% of their sets are silverplated (and even stainless steel).
But they still do silver tableware, like you can see on their website :
https://www.christofle.com/eu_fr/couverts/categories/fourchettes.html?main_material=522&product_list_order=price_desc
But even tiny forks and spoons are 400€ a pop minimum, so this is rarely the kind of stuff who ends up on ebay, more like Drouot and Tiffany's auction houses.

I automatically discard anything named Christofle usually on ebay because i almost only see silverplated being auctioned, that's maybe why the auction ended up being this low, scrappers automatically dodge it. But the gold plating on the pic got me curious, since i've never seen it applied on anything but silver for tableware. Ended up being a good call, as the Minerve 1 hallmarks on the pics confirmed it was indeed .950.

>We may be doing well but there is always more for us to learn, let's keep sharpening our skills and hoarding those cheapies my fren.
Aye! Noticing only last week i got "scammed" 2 months ago (too late for a recourse) definitely was a warning sign and a wakeup call i still have much to learn and to never let my guard down.

24k looks so nice. Sean foo the YouTube gold/ economy guy has a huge 24k bracelet that he wears sometimes and I want one... but its expensive enough that people would case your house out if they saw you wearing it. That is stupid, why would ALL your money be in PM? Make it 5 or 10 or maybe even 20%.
>If I need money... What now? Surely I wouldn't go liquidate this shit for the money.
In reality you shouldn't stack if you don't have enough emergency money. Build your emergency fund first, that way you don't have trouble when your washing machine pops or the car needs a costly repair.

If you have 20k and you have monthly expenses of 1k, you should build an emergency fund of 3k, buy 1oz of gold, which means roughly 15%, and invest the rest in assets that have a return and generate cashflow.
Surely this should be obvious after 5 minutes of googling?

I appreciate the explanation of how you usually react to Christofle pieces, on ebay almost everything I see from them is plated so I tend to ignore it too. I think you may be developing a new facet of your scrapping repertoire, maybe you can research and learn if there are unusual solid silverware items that Christofle rarely made in silverplate which you can have some efficient saved searches for?
>a wakeup call i still have much to learn and to never let my guard down.
>Any cheapie recently acquired (or about to be) on your side fren?

I'm watching several promising things including a non-hallmarked early 1800s karat gold pocket-watch accessory which may be a tasty cheapie, but a recent educational loss was a batch of 6 nice old Austrian silver spoons incorrectly listed as silverplate which I thought would fly under the radar and was looking forward to sniping, but evidently a more assertive scrapper contacted the seller and got them to change the auction to a Buy-It-Now for $15+shipping. ~5oz of silver for the price of 1 ugly pleb buffalo round is nothing extraordinary or worth crying about, but it too was a wakeup-call and reminder that I should be more proactive about either submitting a placeholder bid or messaging those ignorant boomoids directly to buy their shinies cheap and early. I haven't done it often but literally every single time I've messaged sellers before to suggest changing their listing to Buy-it-now they have agreed, however this is because I've only made such offers to sellers I had a good "theory of mind" read on based on their writing style and other items being sold and was sure I could successfully manipulate. I don't really enjoy doing it but believe being more ballsy and brazen in jewing boomers might be well worth the effort; the more bait you scatter the more bites you'll get.

it's easier than melting and pouring shit, I'll tell ya how to make a decent ring outta just a silver quarter. drill a hole in it the size of the finger, then get a stick of steel round stock the size you want it to end up. put the ring on it, clamp it down, and start slowly heating and then bashing it to form. do this a while till you get a decent ring goin, go to amazon and buy a cheap mandrel and bash the ring tight on that to get to doing your final polishing and stuff. to polish the inside make a sandpaper wrapped bit for your drill press and run it real slow and just sand it out by hand, it's ok if you take too much cause you can always cut it and re attach it together with silver solder but you should try not to. you can do any neat cuts or rough shapes before that polishing. in terms of setting the gem just go buy some sterling gem settings and use silver solder to attach them, you can have a flat spot on the ring ready for that. if all else fails Im sure theres a "silver quarter ring tutorial" online
