I have 20k in savings, 30k in a CD at 5% and 30k in my TSP and 7k in my ROTH IRA. I've also got 2 years credible service in the FERS pension system so I can retire in 28 years. Recently I started a 529 for my daughter. and I have a paid off car. The only thing I'm missing is a house. Trying to wait for a better market.

Emergency fund/down payment is in a hysa. It’s currently at 25k. Adding about 500-700 a month. It’s all I can allocate to it without taking from other things like my 401k or after tax brokerage.

My physical bank has about 2k in checking and 5k in savings. I could move it over to my hysa but if I ever need a few 1000s I don’t want to wait the however many days a transfer takes. I keep about 1k cash in my safe in 20s.

The question should not be "how much" but "why even use" a bank in the 1st place? You're asking me how much I "keep" in a for profit institution that plays with my money recklessly and gets bailed out every single time? The answer is ZERO.

We live in a digital age, banks are a dying business model. I can secure my 1's and 0's which represent the assets that I own in myraid of ways without banks. I will NEVER use a bank again, after the quiet bailout. Fuck 'em

Even in the US for the vast majority of people coming up with 500$ in an emergency is about their limit. Almost nobody actually has three whole months of expenses saved in an account somewhere for a rainy day, I've known three people in my entire life that did that and they were all millionaires with established businesses and that was about as much of their wealth that they kept liquid in any form for immediate use. Something like three quarters of the country couldn't come up with more than a grand in an emergency, hell even a lot of companies don't have three months of expenses sitting around.

I have a few bank accounts mainly for investments and day to day stuff

I have in qll my personal accounts around £120k despite making almost £200kpa, most of my cash is spread out aroundy six businesses, stocks, bonds, physical metals and crypto.

Start a business or two get it to a point where its generating a good monthly profit, expand it by hiring a manager, a few employees and gtfo, let it run itself monthly or quarterly checks are best. Rince and repeat for success. It does also help to have a trade as for certain business i.e. construction and lumber industry, its easier to get into and bring a healthy monthly profit but do require more involvement.

Those places are risky enough as is but throw in the fact we're in a credit crisis and the risk just increases. Generally speaking I am comfortable just leaving cash or coins on an exchange but I also wouldn't do that now for the aforementioned reason. I just don't want to be a casualty because someone else went down and took me with them (insolvency).
