There’s a handful of older dudes who own businesses, land, ranches, ect, and their families who have jobs running those. Sometimes they live in the area sometimes in nearby towns. Then there’s the people living in the area who manage the businesses or ranches for an ok sum, they make it by usually, and are usually middle aged or older guys with families. They manage the McDonald’s and Walmarts and shit. Then there’s everyone else who’s either working shit jobs or on welfare, and usually involved in drugs or similar.

1) Tradies - Electricians, plumbing, etc... It's easy to have a monopoly on a small town if you do simple research, as there's a lack of tradesmen in sparsely populated countrysides and boomers will pay you $80/hr to install chandeliers
2) Medical jobs - Elder care, medicine, nursing, etc.. Aging population means that there's a constant supply of meat
3) Infrasturcture - working powerlines, setting up fiber optics, tarring roads
4) Pensions and gibs

But yes, ever increasing economic hyperinflation is making the urban/rural divide even more insane as young people are bottlenecked into ever decreasing options and expensive degrees and programs which pay livable wages. In the small town I grew up in the local city council was a bunch of nepotistic Karens who claimed to work 2 jobs worth of pay but only worked 1 job so they made like ~100k a year living in a town where the average house price is ~120k. It's the usual scams, or tradies, or people who inherited homes. The wagies usually rent duplex apartment conversions of houses from the early 1900's that look like they're about to fall over.
