I like buybacks in theory, but the reality is that when my oil stocks run a massive buyback it just shrinks the equity down to zero. Shares worth the same, company shrinks. Then it gets bought out for a 20% premium that's 30% below your cost basis from 2 years earlier.
Meanwhile PBR has paid out more in divvies than my cost basis.

If your holding period is 6-12 months, there are tax advantages too. Long term cap gains qualified rate kicks in faster for divvy payouts.
In my experience, many stocks oscillate between overvalued/undervaluation extremes at some point within a 12 month period. Just look at tech stocks a year ago vs today.
