By "profitable" I mean having a position and swing or daytrading it alone would've made someone a shitload over the last few years. The difference is a lot of the people that hold GME hold it direct registered rather than with a broker which reduces liquidity a lot more than broker held shares, which do matter but can be juggled more efficiently. The market depends on churn to work, when there stops being that churn and shares start getting bought and held it makes it far more difficult to push the price down. These schizos have been at it for several years and have a quarter of the company pulled out of the trading system entirely, every other company you named doesn't have anything like that besides maybe the towel retailer to a far smaller extent. In a nutshell, if shorts control most of the shares they can push a company into nothing. They can create more shares than exist and sell those into the market but it creates a position they have to close out every time they do it, the largess of price manipulation in the markets happens with HFT's trading shares back and forth a shitload of times per second to artificially push the price up or down for not much money. An extreme example would be something like HKD that was largely held by just a few institutions and went from like 8$ a share to several grand a share presumably for collateral purposes. If a bunch of longs start buying and not trading shares and just sitting on them there becomes less "room" to maneuver the price in any direction other than up. Past a certain point it becomes a self-fueling fire because even just trying to keep the price low becomes prohibitively expensive and that's not getting into what is owed for what was already sold. You can't play physical cards online or alone in your house, but local card shops are usually small if they exist at all and alot of people who might be in the area don't even know what or where they are. GameStop would just transfer all the backend stuff to their market place and player launcher. I know options makes everyone in this thread seethe (shillies and holders alike) but it is a choice for people who are afraid of missing out but are bored of holding.
