My life has objectively gotten worse ever since I started working. I don't understand why my family would work for generations just to leave me with nothing and expect me to work the rest of my existence.

I have a 71-year-old uncle who never had any kids and never got married but he still works 50 hours per week and owns his house and several rental properties outright. I just don't get it. I bet he doesn't even have a will since he is one of those people who thinks they are going to live forever.

Hard truth is that they probably didn’t know what to do (information was scarce then), knew what to do but just couldn’t make it work, or they simply cared more about enjoying their lives more than ensuring their kids or grandkids and certainly other descendants didn’t have to work. Even if they were successful, it’s very difficult to build and keep generational wealth.
