I wonder whether the safety mechanism was working and she just literally didn't know how to use it. Every single fast food freezer has one. A girl got stuck in the freezer for a few minutes at my first job decades ago (Dairy Queen), and I saw one of those safeties in action. Its pretty brilliant - its just a big screw that holds the latch mechanism to the door. A few turns to free the screw, and the entire latch - front and back of door - fall to the ground and there's literally nothing holding the door shut, you can push it open with your toe.

The smart thing to do would have been to jam the fan ducting with food and anything you can get your hands on. The compressor can’t blow cold air either way and you now have an air source that’s temperate from the outside.

I work in commercial refrigeration so I’ll give you actual advice. There is usually a hand valve on the liquid or “feed” line. It’s the smaller one. Turn it closed and the evaporator or big fan thing will stop cooling. Alternately you can take the panels off the evaporator. On either side and just start tearing apart the electrical. They control the fans, power, EEV.

The storage room is going to contain some valuables. But that itself isn't a lot. The key issue is that restocking might mean a loss of revenue as you wait for restock.
