Excluding the rich who are immune to recessions:
> Scenario 1: They aren't affording it. They're piling all of their expenses onto credit cards and not paying the full balance every month anymore.
> Scenario 2: they're unemployed and simply surviving all of savings.
> Scenario 3: they're refinancing their now bloated-value homes to cash out and using that cash to survive and buy further assets.
> Scenario 4: They just got a big time promotion and affording stuff has been comfier than ever (they were already affording it just fine before aka upper middle class).

>"Bread and circuses" is a metonymic phrase referring to superficial appeasement. It is attributed to Juvenal, a Roman poet active in the late first and early second century CE.
>In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses).
>Juvenal originally used it to decry the "selfishness" of common people and their neglect of wider concerns. The phrase implies a population's erosion or ignorance of civic duty as a priority.

The typical person blows everything they make, even if they have a shiny new car and house bought with debt, they still are left with nothing at all until these are theoretically paid off someday.
Someone I know that's senior to me at work was talking about how their 40k house down payment wiped them out the other week. This is a senior engineer making 120k+ for 10+ years in in BFN, USA.
I suppose they could be lying but on average people are statistically like this even at high incomes. I'm pretty normie but I'm still astounded by them.

we drive similar cars and have all-around similar "stuff" like you mention, we go out to all the same overpriced after-work events because we have nothing else to do, and so forth. but i cannot figure out where that extra 50-60% of their paycheck goes that I can easily invest for growth.
if i went around trying to be retarded with money, financing cars, not investing, i don't know if i could bring myself down to that level unless i started just giving away hundred dollar bills every day after work? my place would just look like a hoarder's den before i bought enough garbage.

Ask them what they spend their money on. You’d be surprised. The most common answer will be “I don’t know”. That usually means they’re prone to small purchases that slowly eat up a lot of income. $100/week on coffee type stuff. It’ll open your eyes to how ridiculous people are. People who don’t bring lunch to work are a red flag to me for shitty spending.

sometime i think investing is a meme, you think are smarter than everyone but then you realize most people live 100 years 20 of those you are kid tand 35 of those you are a grandpa
that leaves you 45 of adult life. in that time what do you do? save every penny in ever decreasing dollar? I mean even the US goverment rather be on debts because that way they win money by it losing value.

you save, save, save live frugally all your life and invest everything. then you reach 40-50 and if you were lucky to not get your investment crushed or some bullshit or you didn't die in accident, you have some money to have fun in ur 50s

is it really better than buying a really nice car in 20-40 which increase you status and then give you better tiches to fuck? and possible marry into, a better genetic pretty wife that will give you better genetic offspring etc.

don't think about it as black and white. it's defeintly not conclsuive that debt maxing and lifemaxing in your prime is worse than investmaxing in your prime.
never think that you are smarter than the guy who buy new BMW car in his 30s because he want to have fun. but what you do is put it all into investment that get crushed 10 years later.

SAM hyde is one that constantly shill against spending and tell you invest/savemax and buy 1995 toyota but then he goes car shopping and get a porsche gtr 3 which increase his life quality by substantial amount over you with your 2005 toyota corolla
> more fun
> more happy
> better status
> more pretty genetic cuttie pussy as result from higher status etc

what you gonna do? tell impress girls with your portfolio? the male sex has is always about peacocking in all animals. this is how you get PRIME pussy with good genetics in your prime. we can never knoiw what will happen in 20-30 years but we know for sure that the dollar weakens 3% yearly

what about someone who is ugly short and is investmaxing, what does he have to offer to young prime slut?

90% of men are the above

if you want prime better offspring. you gotta peacock in 25-35.

In the end genetics > money. if you peacocked good sexy waifu, you may have vastly better life quality with better quality kids etc, even in your 40-50s than fat ugly turd wife with autistic kids but HEY you got enough money to buy a house now in your 50s so good for you

I can't say that this is a universal problem, but I see a lot of friends and family members who are way overleveraged right now. If they were to get fired, they wouldn't have enough buffer to last past the 1-2 month mark.

For instance, a family member has an $880 per month car payment. Their spouse has a $600 per month car payment. The home they live in costs them $7,500 per month and an additional $1,200 in utilities. Add in car insurance, fuel, groceries and they are close to $12,000 per month in expenses (and that's before the miscellaneous spending - the club membership, etc).

They make a collective $240,000 per year, which is about $15,000 per month after taxes. That leaves roughly $3,000 per month for savings or investment, but they are heavy spenders on clothes and other things, so I know it's not being saved. I've had to loan them several thousand dollars over the last few months which tells me they have management and duration issues as well.

The economic climate over the last 3 years have rewarded irresponsible behavior. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people may crash and burn if we do get a real economic downturn where they lose their jobs.

Part of me feels like a loser for not living that lifestyle when maybe I *can* afford it, but I feel I'll be rewarded in the end by continuing on a path of making responsible financial decisions, living below my means and deferring the gratification.

This is most likely true - unreasonable cases of government subsidizing aside, the unitary costs of 1kg/lb of protein, cooking oils, and staple carbohydrates are remarkably similar worldwide, regardless of PPP.

Being generous with this estimate, 0.5g of protein per lb of body mass is enough to have moderate health and physical activity.

If one's grocery budget is 50$/wk, then without extreme frugality it becomes implausible to sustain any level of serious exercise due to inadequate nutrition.

Credit card debt in the US is at an all time high - people are running out of cash to live their lives. And it’s only going to get worse when student loans kick back in this week. For the time being, people are fine with living on credit because they still think (or hope, really) that now the inflation is a bit lower again, surely prices will drop soon. Obviously that’s not gonna happen. At the same time, you can’t just keep accumulating debt. Something’s got to give. Americans need to either earn more or spend less, and the first part is not happening in this economy. Again, right now people are still getting into debt instead of lowering their living standards, but not for long.
I expect a massive economy crisis in Q1 2024 when people start to realise they really have to stop spending and demand will fall off a cliff.

No idea. My entire industry has been on strike since May and I’ve worked like 4 days on non union jobs since then. No end in sight either so I’m seeing my life savings evaporate. And everything is increasing in price from groceries to rent. Super not chill.

your fed withholdings are fucked up, so you should be getting money back when you file. too lazy to do the exact math but you're at: $90k gross - $8.7k between 401k and insurance - $14k standard deduction = $67k taxable. that should be almost exactly $10k in federal tax at 2023 brackets, or $420 per pay period assuming 24 pay periods per year.

Oh Interesting. I got a big return last year because I started the job half way thru the year.

I wonder why that is? My fed withholding is 554.80 per paycheck, with yes 24 pay periods thru the year. And what I posted above wasnt worded the best, all those deductions are per pay check, every two weeks. Left with 2100 per check.

A lot of zoomers/millenials I know are making it off of mommy and daddy's money. Others simply aren't saving, and are paying their entire patycheck in rent, phone, car, insurance, gas, food, etc. and are basically doomed to living a life of servitude.

I would say ~10% are actually doing well and living a middle class lifestyle by 30. I suppose a lot of this has been due to the bar for "making it" being so much lower now. People are fine with just paying for 2 meals a day, their phone (cheap entertainment), their car expenses, and taking some hoe out to Chili's once a week.

If they're a woman, 9/10 they're milking some dude for vacations/dates.

i'll lay it out
>income
work: approx $4,000/mo (after all tax/withholding)
investments: approx $2,500/mo
side hustles: approx $250-500/mo (income, on net I generally lose money or break even. it's selling exotic fish/shrimp/reptiles I breed for fun)

>bills
mortgage: $2,800/mo (incl tax/insurance)
utilities: approx $300/mo (internet, garbage, electric, gas, water)
transportation: approx $350/mo (auto insurance, gas, maintenance costs)
groceries: approx $350/mo (could be much lower but I like nice meats, cheeses and imported liquor too much)
emergency savings/home maintenance: approx $200/mo

So I'm taking in about 6.5k and spending about 4k. The remaining $2.5k is usually split between investing, hobbies, and saving for vacations or major home improvements. Waging is the best way for most people to build wealth. Playing crypto slots is retarded and doesn't actually take much time if that's really how you're going to blow your hard earned money.

Unironically learned to code. Got it just at the cusp of AI fucking over starter tech jobs, brother that graduated at the same time as me still can't find a job (granted he's looking for remote but nobody's hiring a guy with no experience for a remote position). Also have parents that love me and aren't retarded enough to kick out their kids at 18 so I'll stop hemorrhaging money on rent soon (only left because work forced me to move but I'm approved to go remote now). Even if they wouldn't let me back in I make roughly 90k now, started at 85k a year ago. Take home pay is a little over $3600 after taxes, insurance, and cramming the legal max in a 401k. Rent is $1500 and that's about as low as you can get for a 1bed/studio in an area you won't get shot.
Some other anon asked a week(?) ago when I was relaying this info in another thread about location: job is in Atlanta, god knows why, I think the main reason people are even getting approved for remote now is because the commute to the office sucks such ass as a result
