They both refer to three month periods but it's entirely incidental. A trimester is 1/3, a quarter is 1/4. 1/3 of a pregnancy is 3 months, 1/4 of a year is 3 months. A 4 month period out of a year is that year's trimester, because 4/12 is 1/3.
