My brother is being scammed, but I can't work out the angle. Some foreign woman, who accidentally messaged him after getting one digit wrong on a number, kept chatting to him after realising the mistake. Eventually she told him about her crypto trading group and encouraged him to invest - i.e. major scam alert. But he got involved, and in the last couple of weeks he has made thousands of £. What's the angle? He has his own account and she just advises him which trade to make, so he can withdraw the profits any time.

The front CEX, advertised idea of crypto, yes, it's a scam. Can you make money staring at the candlesticks? Maybe, if you're lucky but the CEX is there to take fees from you. You are the sheep to the slaughter.
On the other side of the coin, defi pools need liquidity and want your liquidity. Low fees, you can make steady profit and do just fine.

So is it a scam, or not?
Depends on what you're doing and where you're doing it.
