I remember back circa 2009 having a friend who was an electrical engineer buy a second-hand car for something like $10 grand AUD. I was perplexed at the time, but now I realise how smart he was.

New cars are a scam. I paid $2000 for my car 5 years ago and I've been daily driving it since with a few repairs here and there. I've saved thousands compared to my friends and family who are still paying off their cars. Lot of old cars out there that are kept away in garages by boomers and still look good at 15 years old.

bought the family's latest ride (5 years old) for cash too, good one anon

>New cars are a scam.
This is true.
Even the fucking lightbulbs have DRM in them these days.
I wish we still lived in the days you could just build your own car, but modern regulations are specifically designed to prevent that.

I just bought a Honda Ridgeline for$46,000. I will trade my truck in for 20k, and use cash from my checking account for the rest of it.

Yesterday I passed by a brand new bmw x-something in my 20yo japanese shitbox. The beamer was in safe mode driving around 15 kph and holding a line of 20-30 cars behind him.

As for the 'cheap' new cars, at least over here, while 5-7 k will buy you an indestructible old NA 4banger with a good throttle response, while 20-25k buys you a 3cyl turbo crapper with horrible lag and rev hang that is more expensive to fix. The only advantage to the new car is crash safety, everything else is worse.
