A friend of nine's parents can't afford the mortgage anymore on a house they've been paying off for 20 years and since they're not close to paying it off

When you factor in for inflation this is pretty much identical to the sudden surge and peak at $877 in the early 80s. Why the fuck would anyone buy a home now when the historical trend shows a surge like this met by a similarly rapid decline within just a couple of years?
