Is joining the Army a good financial decision? Just turned 19 and my family is dirt poor. We're thinking this could be my way to escape the cycle of poverty and get to the middle class.

As an officer? Yes. As enlisted? Generally not.

takes a while but it pays off fine if you stick to it

get yourself disabled and then go into government work. Try to avoid fun stuff like forestry or working with animals since that doesn't really pay. Industry is good. Water treatment or some boring desk job works fine. After a mere 40 years on the government dole you will be a millionaire making a top 10% wage and great benefits.

it sucks really bad though. All of it. Military, government job, all of it. It sucks.

why? Seems like any other job, but probably with a lot of down time

the job itself is fine, but the people are trapped there because they can't make anywhere near as much money in the private sector.

trapped people very quickly start to hate their job and their coworkers. So they make everyone around them miserable. Then those people make other people miserable. That's it for government jobs, just a chain reaction of misery.

military is a bit better because those kids don't realize they're trapped yet. But the way the government does things is so weird and backwards you're bound to have some dissatisfaction. Also military you're basically on call 24/7, and your boss can literally work you like a slave. Unlike real jobs.

How the fuck do you get enough good references for that? You don't have any friends and you can't use family.

Can you swim?
Can you risk going through life a cripple?
Will anybody take care of you if your legs are blown off?

Unironically OP, if you move to texas and join the army national guard, they will send you down to the Mexican border to build fence and pay you $75k/year, as a private. The army sucks balls for other reasons but right now, in Texas in the guard, that paycheck is pretty nice. I don’t do it because I have a good wfh civilian job but it’s not a bad deal

>For most people it's just like any day job
sorta.

a day job where your boss provides your housing and inspects your bedroom regularly. Where showing up for work late can get you demoted and your pay cut to nothing. Where getting a sunburn can land you in jail. Or smoking some weed in your free time can get you punished and tossed out with a permanent record roughly equal to a felony.

they have a lot more control over you than a regular job does. Not saying it isn't worth it, but it differs from a day job in a lot of big ways. Other than that it's just a job with all the petty office politics and inane crap that goes on at any job. Maybe a bit more than usual.

yes if you join for a technical MOS (ideally in the air force) and use the GI Bill while you're in. do not sign ANYTHING if they cannot guarantee you the MOS you want.

requires a decent ASVAB or whatever they're using now. But yes. Trades and industrial tech both pay off after your contract is up.

disability pays off even better.

a combination of skill and disability is what you'll actually be competing against when you leave.

At your age, in your situation, generally yes. Part of the problem is that "the big army" can be the lowest common denominator. You want to clearly choose a specialty ahead of time and ensure you qualify. It's the difference between coming out as a professional or just with a little bit of extra money.

You have two paths - SOF or "useful specialty" that you can apply in the real world. SOF just because you are around some great people and the mil will invest a ton into you, even though it's not civilian-applicable. Some technical MOS will land you good paying jobs outside of mil. E.g. cybersecurity, aircraft mechanic, etc. Hopefully some others can mention what's "hot" right now.

Does anyone know how the GI Bill works without getting deployed nowadays?

It's like that in Canada, you need like 10 references of good charector. They look at your credit score and check job history. All this fucking shit. That's what held me back. I'm a fucking loser lmfao

>>55949137

lol I joined up in the US a long time ago, but losers were exactly who they were looking for.

I think at the time you had to have a diploma or GED and that was about it. You had to score higher than "retard" on the ASVAB, and pass a few physicals. At the time you couldn't be gay or atheist, but I hear those are ok now.

>> No.55949160

the US does require that stuff for security clearances, but you can join the military here without any particular clearance. It just holds you back in some jobs, but not most.

I am a bong, so I can't speak for the US military, but I don't regret joining the Navy. The pay is pretty shit for the hours, but I basically live for free so disposable income isn't bad. The work is interesting, the people are generally relaxed and fun to be around.
One piece of advice that must be universal is don't just 'join the military', make sure you're going in to do a specialist role of some sort. Nobody needs you to shoot things or go hiking with heavy equipment when you leave, but there are civvy companies that maintain helicopters, that require marine engineers etc. Go for those useful roles, the military experience in them will be directly valuable.

In the US pretty much every veteran gets hiring preference with government jobs and government contractors. So even unskilled vets get hired at least in theory.

in practice about 7% of our population is veterans, so unskilled vets usually wind up losing those jobs to the skilled ones.

No. Don't. I joined and went to Afghanistan - we were told to contain the Taliban without hurting them. Our sarge was a tranny. And the only injury I picked up was from a black soldier with a beef about white people.

It will pay off, I'd be fucked if I never joined the military and now I got it made. Just go special ops, or get a highly technical MOS. If you go in as a truck driver or regular infantry, no employers will give a fuck after you get out. You know what former infantry guys do when they get out? Work at gun stores.

Really just depends on what you want to do. There's always going to be a market for high-speed low-drag shitkickers and that's a fine job to have but you'll pay for it with pain and disability when you get old. For anyone that isn't walking into a recruiters office asking what piece of paper they have to sign to put bullets in dirtbags without going to prison, there's ten more people that could run a computer or cook the food or drive the trucks. The shitkickers always poke fun at the POGs but either is fucked without the other and they're all necessary and important roles.
