55824024 No.55824024 [Reply] [Original]

>When student loan payments resume, 56% of borrowers say they’ll have to choose between their debt and buying groceries
>Federal student loan payments are coming back, and they’re going to wreak havoc on borrowers’ budgets.
>Interest accruals resume on Sept. 1 and payments will be due in October for the first time in over three years.
>But over half of borrowers (56%) say they will be forced to choose between making their loan payment or covering necessities, like rent and groceries, when the pandemic forbearance ends
>Resuming student loan payments is likely going to hurt millions of households that had found some financial security over the past three years.
>68% of borrowers with household incomes under $50,000 say they’ll have to choose between keeping up with their loan payments and buying necessities
>45% of borrowers with household incomes of $100,000 or more say they’ll be forced to make those hard choices.
>45% of borrowers expect their loans to go delinquent when the forbearance ends

we wouldn't be having a lot of the problems now that we are having if the consumer would just stop spending so damn much. But no. They have to be broken. This is a good thing.

Apparently terrible. Pretty sure everyone with incomes over $100k maxed their financials the past few years buying houses they couldn't afford, cars they couldn't afford, vacations they couldn't afford, ect. Low interest rates are good but the greed of consumers knows no bounds. They all took on way too much debt.

Because a huge chunk of adult society is stuck in childhood where they expect someone else to wipe their ass. These adolescent adults need a swift kick in the ass to bring them into adulthood. Being forced to make decisions that pay the bills rather than allow them to continue to live like children is a good thing.

It's piss easy for student loan servicers to garnish wages. They don't even have to serve the debtor and get it approved by a judge like other types of debt, federal law streamlines the garnishment process.

Department of Education implemented a one year grace period though so no unpaid balances will go to collections and effectively there's no penalty for not paying (which it's arguable if this is even legal and isn't effectively a payment pause, which Congress outlawed). But unless the rules change, nobody has to worry about garnishments for another year after payments start back up. Biden admin kicked the can down the road yet again and is probably hoping they can get their backup debt cancelation plan through before anyone has to actually start paying. Hopefully they get BTFO again in the courts.

PPP and basically every public policy implemented during COVID were such a shitshow. One in four PPP loans have been flagged as being potentially fraudulent. I remember a study too seeing a large correlation between areas of the country with a high concentration of PPP recipients and places that saw the highest increases in housing prices over the last couple years. Basically a lot of people just took that PPP money (that they received either legitimately or fraudulently by setting up fake companies and payrolls) and pumped it into real estate, cars, etc. even further exacerbating inflation.

And the real reason student loans will never be forgiven is that federal student loans can't be discharged in bankruptcy, as written into law by Congress in 1976.

Because being perpetually in debt isn’t a matter of circumstances, but character. These same people had their student loans paused for years because of the flu, had free money from the govt given to them, and inflation / record hot job market / record hot stock market to build wealth. Anyone older than 5 should be able to see that situation wouldn’t last indefinitely. But it was a prime opportunity to pay off that debt and build a nest egg.

Instead the following happens:
> home valuation hit records? If we own a house let’s cash out refinance and buy some dumb chit we don’t need or remodel the home because HGTV said so. If we rent let’s buy something we can’t afford because fomo
> stock market hit records? Not enough. Let’s chase even riskier investments, meme stocks, crypto, NFTs, etc buy on this at the top and get wiped out
> hot labor market means more salary? Let’s spend more
> interest rates are low. Time to get that car, boat, RV, etc. after all it’s free money Anon
> student loan debt paused and mortgage forbearance paused? More money to spend anons

And after all this these people (redditors) still have the audacity to blame inflation and rent for their problems. These people are perpetually broke because they are perpetual losers. They had everything handed to them the last few years and still squandered it. Character, not circumstances.

People took out these loans because they were promised up and down that if they got a university degree they would get a great high paying job afterwards. Indeed in the 90s and earlier, the stats were all geared in favour of graduates: university grads had much higher employment rates, high rates of pay, and more permanent job positions.

but while they were in school and taking on the debt, the stats changed. now university degrees are meaningless and you are actually less likely to be employed and paid well if you have a bachelor's degree than if you had a college diploma.

And this is what it boils down to. No Dems want to get rid of student loans because they're perverting the system to just turn it into free/subsidized higher education, which is a policy they've always wanted. You let people take out loans, but then put them on IDR plans where their payments are capped at 5% of discretionary income or even $0. Then after 10 years with the new SAVE plan you forgive them, and once it's all said and done the borrower hasn't even paid back anywhere close to the principle and amount they borrowed on the loan. Instead John Q Taxpayer has beared the burden of subsidizing their college education.

It is really, really funny imagining someone that thinks sending $150 billion over to Ukraine is a better idea than the 1 million different ways that money could be used to help Americans pay back student loans.

It wouldn't even need to be "student loan forgiveness". It could be like, "join the Army for 2 years and automatically get $10K in debt forgiveness" or programs to help the homeless in exchange for automatic student loan forgiveness, or I don't know, fucking anything that would benefit our country more than helicoptering over corrupt Ukrainian politicians houses and dumping money on them and defense contractors

There are no banks lmao, 90% of student loans are originated by the Federal government, which is required by law to give those unsecured loans to teenagers regardless of creditworthiness or ability to pay it back.

There wouldn't be a student loan crisis if the federal government didn't tax and borrow to give them out, because no bank in their right mind would underwrite a $100k loan for Shaquanda's degree in Wakanda Studies. It's basically impossible for a high school grad to get a private student loan without a cosigner, for example. This is the answer right here. When people have any amount of money they are not used to having... Often they will spend it on stupid shit or will try to live a lifestyle they won't be able to afford cuz of being idiots w no idea what to do next for more money. I have seen plenty of divorcee bitches for instance who got a big lump sum from their poor bastard of an ex husband. You know what they always end up doing? Too cheap and you basically aren't living - my uncle is extremely frugal and while very rich he is close to his 80s and basically has never lived outside of a quest to save money. Too much of a moron and you go into debt with countless dumb items and toys.

I think you should go on vacations, get a nice car at some point in your life, buy something nice for yourself on occasion. Sometimes go out to eat.

The problem is you look outside and it is wave after wave of fat people. People drinking or on drugs. The common friday/saturday activity now is to get wasted.
