Giant houses like that are just imitating the fancy large estate house of the past, without understanding why those house were so large. Back in the day, before cars & telephones, a large, wealthy landowner would need to have his staff close on hand, so those mansions basically acted as boarding houses for various employees, like cooks, gardeners, maids, groundskeepers, stable workers, and so on. Today of course you can simply hire gardening or cleaning services to come to your house, no need to have them live with you. But because rich people in the past had these super large houses, they end up appealing to rich in the present.
