But I haven't taken out any loans?

>> No.55802472

I did, it wasn't really that hard. Took 3.5 years. The hard part was getting the first job but after that it was mainly just about not getting fired and living frugally. Everyone I know who still has student loan debt has been stupidly paying the minimum this whole time and when payments were frozen for covid, they figured they didn't have to make payments at all even though they still had their job. Honestly all the talk from the government about cancelling the loans has made things worse because now people are not making payments because they think the whole thing will get wiped out, so why throw away money?

The better move would be to change the terms for student loans so that they CAN be discharged in bankruptcy, and the UNIVERSITY that they attended is on the hook for covering the loans. It would realign the incentives for universities to keep costs low and ensure every student will be able to find a job after graduating (and will be able to graduate instead of dropping out halfway with tons of debt and nothing to show for it).
