I can't decide between:

1) Forex daytrading
2) Stock swing trading
3) Stock long term investment in indices

I have about $10k-30k to start out with and basic finance knowledge, have spent past 3 years reading investopedia, forums, /biz/ and other resources. I have talked with several traders, have general knowledge on how disciplined you have to be to trade. But I still think I'm not ready.

Stocks seem to have commissions way too high and due to living in Eastern Europe and not having Vanguard and what not directly available. I think for long term investment in indices I should have about $30k to start out with.

Stock swing trading - same thing. If I have less than $30k I will get destroyed by commissions.

Forex - seems most viable for now.

Thoughts?

They have 114 employees, which means it isn't some crapshoot 2 employee team BioTech penny stock. They have an upcoming drug waiting on BLA filing that treats Malaria. Then they have a drug that treats Melanoma in Final Ph 3 data. Both are partnered with GSK. They've had large negative returns this year, meaning they've been spending a lot in R&D, but they have a healthy D/E and P/E ratio. The BLA filing is anticipated to be this year, in 2014. The Melanoma drug in Final Ph 3 data is expected 2015.

Forex fag here...

In another thread there was a question about the difference between brokers so I though I would demonstrate that with my 2 main accounts. The thread I was going to reply to is kill so maybe those faggots will see my post here.

Larger time frames have more discrepancies in candle formations as the variation between different brokers and their server times and operating hours become more noticeable with the slightest differences.

You would not notice them as much on <H1 charts since 99% of brokers operate on the hour while time frames like H4 can easily overlap if one broker opens an hour earlier/later than another.

As you can see in pic related, even indicators with the same settings on the same time frames can give slightly different signals. I know there is a feature in MT4 to manually shift time but IDGAF.

Hey, Got a small question about bank accounts & interest rates.

I recently inherited £100k and made an initial withdrawal of around £16k to cover my previous debt and allow me to return to studying.
When the cheque clears I'll have £14.8k sitting in my account, I have some bills to pay off so that should bring it down to about £14k at the end of the year.

Currently it'll sit in a current account making next to no interest, I have a savings account and an ISA to put them in but the interest rates are 0.75% and 1%.
Since I'll be living off the money this year (paying rent, buying food, decorating etc) what is the best way to bank this to reap the maximum interest? Most UK bank accounts I see offer alright-ish interest rates for "regular" deposits but I just want something with an alright interest rate that gives me easy access to my money.

Fuck, poverty was so much easier.

What I'm doing/have done is use my macroeconomic forecasting knowledge to try and predict trends over a time horizon of 1-3 months.

For instance, back a month or two ago when the S&P took it's big dip, which investors were calling a market correction, I moved most of my money into SPXL, which is a 300% levered ETF, because I knew the S&P was going to keep rising.

You can do this with pretty much any industry/sector/trend. There are even levered market volatility ETFs (you make money when the market is just more volatile).

I just started doing a similar thing although I'm not super smart on the analytics of it, I guess I go off practicality of what I know I can make a tidy profit on short/long term. Leveraged ETFs are great.

Yeah, they're great until they're not.

I like to be reasonably sure that they're going where I think they're going.

I feel like I've finally started to turn a corner in my FOREX adventure. This week I pulled in 184 pips total. For me this is huge because I work a pretty typical 9-5 and can't be as dedicated as some. Most of this was on the FXCM mobile app. I have a micro account with them so obviously I'm not making big bucks. But really encouraged that my discipline paid off. My biggest weaknesses were, and might still be always going for revenge trades or hoping for a reverse when a trend emerges. I have no one to tell who would be interested, so here I am /biz/.

How in the actual fuck do I learn to use level 2 properly and intuitively? DVDs, books, I don't care if I have to spend money I just want to become proficient at it, I know it can even be used to avoid short traps but I just don't fucking get it.

Excellent thread. I work a 9-5 like most of you and I'm only 20 right now. I make okay money for where I'm at as a network technician but I fucking hate working away my life for someone else. I have some basic understanding of stocks, but nothing huge. Is there any chance of being a success at the market so that I don't have to work for someone else? and what timeframe would that require? 20 years? 10? a few? I know it isn't easy work and no one gets rich easily and few quickly.

I'd say 60$ feels about right given the last decade or so, there's some tough talk of it going down to 40$. I could see it going as low as 20$, though I would expect the US government to step in at some point if that happens.

Come to think of it, what exactly DOES all this cheap oil mean for the US and the world in general? OPEC and Russia are kind of screwed, though I'd argue Russia a bit less so, but cheap energy for everyone? I'm not sure if the gains in other sectors will more than offset the drop in energy.

This. Back when Level2 accurately represented real bids/asks from real traders, it was a lot more useful. Right now, what would happen would be that an order to buy, say, 21600 shares at $0.1240 limit, AON, would be that a robot would fill 1500 shares at $0.1195, the robot at 0.1240 would withdraw its 20000 shares that were offered at 0.1240, and you'd get no fill.

Unless, of course, there was a real seller at 0.1196, in which case he'd sell to you all he had, and you'd never know he has, say, another million or two to selll.

Sometimes I think the purpose of the bots isn't to add liquidity from retail, it's to take liquidity away. At the very least, it's to hide the real bid/ask spread from the L1 players by only showing 100 shares on the bid and offer, regardless of where a real buyer/seller might exist.

I know two people who work at AMD, and its basically shit. It'll take Steve Jobs + Bill Gates + 100 engineers from LM skunkworks combined to pull the company out of the shitter. Intel is generations away in the their multicore cpu technology. AMD had a boost last year due to GPU demand, and it hoping to coast on consoles, but it wont happen. They only made ~150m on the console market, the rest of their departments are losers.

Option is renting a stock. You pay the rent beforehand and then you can sell the stock. If it goes up you can sell it and give the "value on day of rental" to the owner. If it goes up a lot you can make a lot of money. If it goes down, you can just give the stock back but you'll have paid the rental fees. If it stays even, you still have to pay the rental fees and will lose money.

So it's:

If you sold it:

Profit = current price - price on day of rental - rental fees

If you didn't sell it:

Loss = rental fees

I hope this makes it clear
