kinda, for the sake of shares you record it at the FMV the day you bought it, then you record the sale again at FMV, this will give you a gain or loss. Sometimes the goverment will give you a period of a few months to pick a vluation fate for your stock in cases of estate planning.

This. If there is no market for your stock from which you can discern the FMV, there are a number of valuation methodologies that can be applied. There are a lot of nuances to the valuation process, which is why people generally pay private company valuation experts to determine the price when it is necessary.

I have roughly equal amounts of debt as I have money in checking but 0% Apr for another year on all of it

I am actually graduating this year with a bachelors in Software Engineering even though I am weak programmer

I did manage to pay for school year by year on my own ( helped that I live at home, and mom helped me pay for a few semesters)

I feel like a failure sometimes, but other times I feel like I gained a lot of wisdom from my experiences and made some great relationships/friendships over the years as a part time worker/student

Most I've ever made as an hourly rate has been $19 but I buy/sell stuff on the side.... but yea I sometimes get discouraged when I see threads like this, bit then I also get encouraged at the same time....

hope I can get a decent paying job so I can repay my family andmybe start to be more of a benefit to society in general

Belgian education, it's cheap.
+scholarship when I studied abroad
+money I got gifted somehow amounts to half my net worth, I'll expand on that

5k "moving out support" from parents
5k from grandparents, putting aside money every month since my birth. Since a few years back my grandmother started giving me €25/month.
7k from Aphilion Q2 my father put money in for each of his children
sudden extra 7k because of some tax stuff my parents didn't want the money from (got money from the goverment because my sibling was misdiagnosed a retard, lol)
Parents paid my rent for four years.
Now there's a yearly ~€500 from birthday/christmas gifts from family members.
Got €5/week pocket money. After my 18th they increased it every month, now it's €165.
Family isn't rich, but they get tax advantages for supporting children, so all the money I get (rent/pocket money) is actually money from the goverment.
So there you have me being a spoilt kid.
The bad thing about being spoilt is that I kept spending most of it until I stopped being dumb and I despise myself for it.

I knew a few filthy rich kids too, who got €100 a week pocket money at 16, complained it wasn't enough, but if you asked them what they needed it for, they couldn't remember what they spent it on. Eating out? Nope, parents pay. Clothes? Nope, parents pay. Phone? Nope, parents pay.
One of those kids thought the average wage straight out of college was €8000 netto (per month). When we told him to be realistic, he adjusted his expectation to €7500 netto.

I should go sleep instead of writing a diary on 4chan.

However I'm bout to start a restaurant and I think I can be a great businessman, I just know my restaurant is gonna be a success

I dropped out of high school, don't need it because I'm a natural entrepreneur, don't need math and science and shit.

I spent the last 4 years a NEET living with my clueless parents, just chilling and smoking with friends while contemplating life. I think I've got life figured out, I understand everything and the world is clear to me; I'm smart so I realize that to win at life you just need to be happy and live to the fullest. Politics are clear to me too, which is why I am a liberal (the correct way to live, not like an African-American hating, woman-hating, stupid virgin conservative).

Anyway, no net worth yet but once I get the restaurant up and running life should be nice and easy. Expecting retirement by 30, getting married to my current gf soon so we will be able to retire together in Hawaii.

Put this way, I'm doing an order of magnitude better than someone making $15000/year with no debt. They might increase their net worth by $1000/year... in other words, I'd save more in 8 years than they will their whole life.

so let me get this straight because im new to the whole stocks thing
you have so much in stocks but so little in savings
are you getting dividends from the companys you have stock with or do you only get a payout if you sell the stock you already have higher than what you bought it for?

> Depending on the interest rate of the loan (Fedloans are hilariously low.), it may be more advantageous for him to stick to the payment plan and invest his money.

> This is exactly why the wealthy often finance when they have the means to pay cash.

When wealthy people finance to invest, they are looking at the problem in terms of cash flows. If OP invests, his cash flow is going to be $0 for quite some time, whereas if he pays off the debt then he reduces his net payments sooner.

Business owners also stand to make significantly more than the 4-6% that a standard, diversified long-term index portfolio will make.

Since you are guaranteed a return of 4% or more by paying off the education loans, you should almost always pay them first. To do otherwise assumes a best-case ROI when invsting in securities, which is a very risky thing to do.

Now add in the fact that he's unemployed, so he doesn't have excess capital to invest anyway.

what i find most amusing is that the people posting the most net worth post the least explanation of the number. i wouldn't mind hearing tips from these people at age 26 with 500k to their balance sheets but i'm guessing they're all lying or got it from their parents. what i still fail to understand after all these years of living is, who cares about the number? nobody here cares except the other people chasing numbers, the rest of us would be fine to hear something we don't already know...like a policy, strategy or mindset you had to accumulate wealth so quickly. unfortunately it looks like there's nothing useful here.

yahoo even ran an article about a 27 year old "self-made" millionaire and it turns out he got it from his parents...

I started buying ETFs around July. Just basically sector ETFs that has the highest volume, and treasury bonds ETFs.Up 8.14% since July. I have no idea what I'm doing.
