In all seriousness, what makes you confident that any of this leads to assets priced lower in dollar terms?
I understand that losses are likely in real terms, but how can you be confident that the dollar will not carry the bag as bondholders take the real hit once again?

For example, houses are objectively expensive given record pricing + high rates. Why can't salaries grow into this price as inflation boosts wages, rather than housing prices declining in nominal terms?

Simply put, inflation is bullish for things priced in dollars. I see more inflation ahead.

>For example, houses...Why can't salaries grow into this
Because of wage / price inflation spirals that it would cause. If wages were to "grow into" the housing bubble, we would be having 6%+ annual inflation. The solution of "Give everyone more money!" does not fix the issue. The issue is interest rates remaining high, nearly doubling the cost of a home, prevents any existing home owners from selling - why sell and get out of their 3% mortgage to now get a 7.7% one?
Giving everyone more wages without increasing the supply of housing just results in higher housing prices - it doesn't make them more affordable - more dollars chasing the same number of assets = inflation
>In all seriousness, what makes you confident that any of this leads to assets priced lower in dollar terms?
Once the recession hits, unemployment will rise; this will make delinquencies and defaults sharply rise. When people are stressed financially, they are more willing to sell their assets to make ends meet (I was laid off, can no longer afford my home kind of thing) This also bleeds into equities selling.
More importantly, the decline in economic activity will result in a decline in corporate revenues, a decline in corporate profits. We are already at 20x forward earnings, which is extremely expensive. We also have the worst equity risk premium since 2000 and 1929. Investors will not be willing to pay 20x forward when earnings collapse - equity prices will fall
>inflation is bullish for things priced in dollars
It is.. until it isn't. We are now reaching the point of "isn't" --- at the beginning, consumers try to spend their way out of inflation, they will buy more (as why save money that will be worth less in the future, why not buy the product now for $1.00 than wait a month and it could be $1.10)
however, once we reach a tipping point, businesses can no longer pass off inflation to the consumer with higher prices. the consumer begins to refuse paying the higher prices

What evidence do you have for this claim? This is one of the first quarters where we've really been hearing it from earnings calls.
For example, Coke

>Coke’s pricing strategy hasn’t sparked significant backlash yet from customers, although Quincey said consumers are switching to private label bottled water and juices in Europe and the U.S.
or Pepsi who is now not raising prices any further (why are they doing this? because the consumer won't pay higher prices..)

So basically it sounds like your view is that we go into more of an economic depression with fiscal austerity letting borrowers fail. I feel like the post-2008 policy reaction to rising unemployment is to immediately stimulate the fuck out of everything and cut rates to zero as soon as things look bad for the poor, because that's the most convenient way to buy their votes. In the 2020 covid lockdown crash, we were straight up giving everyone 1k checks on top of paying the unemployed more cash handouts than they were making when they worked an actual job.

I'm still torn between whether we end up like Venezuela/Argentina, where the stock market pumps endlessly higher while the actual economy slowly implodes and living conditions for the poor become increasingly miserable as hyperinflation ravages everything until eventually we see some kind of currency redenomination.
Or the alternative, which you're proposing, where the government sits on its knees and lets the economy collapse to deflation as borrowers slowly realize there simply aren't enough dollars out there to repay everything and go on living.

I've come to the conclusion that most likely the best way to position, regardless, is to buy stocks in companies that primarily operate ex-US. I like Brazil in particular.

Wages went up all through the boomers generations. There was inflation but it wasnt a big deal. People could still buy a boat and a house. Now we have inflation and wages didnt increase anyway to adjust. So it means inflation comes from more than just wages and wages can go up and not impact the market.

Companies are expected to give 2% raise every year as a cost of living adjustment. thats to cover 2% inflation that its supposed to be at. If the wages go up 2% to cover 2% inflation, it cant be the contributing factor then.

>Is China going to overtake the US
No. Their economy is based on fake numbers with an even higher debt to GDP ratio than the US. They lent trillions to third world countries that are all defaulting on that debt and BRICS is DOA. They don't invent anything because they actively discouraged critical thought from the moment you can speak. Forever number 2 based on size alone but even that is slipping thanks to the one child policy and economic struggle for the young generations that have a cultural obligation to take care of the old given there are no social programs.
>Without manufacturing
Definitely not. Given more time maybe they could transition to a service economy but India and Mexico are swooping in thanks to how they handled COVID.

Fairly close to my view - some distinctions I would make
We have had 15 years of not free markets, where monetary policy distorted interest rates, QE, where we have 15 years of build up of bad loans. Talking to some of my friends who work in loan issuance, they tell me about the way that it has worked for them for 10 years - it is all about volume, issuing as many loans as possible for as much money as possible. That is how they receive their bonus. It doesn't matter the interest spread, it doesn't matter their credit worthiness. This has been going on for 15 years. There is systemic risk to the entire credit system because of it.
On top of this, banks balance sheets are getting destroyed by commercial real estate values falling 60%+, deposit outflows (why keep your money in the bank at 0.5% interest when you can buy bonds yielding 5%?) and the inverted yield curve. They have no ability to weather the credit blow up.
I agree with you in that they will try to do bail outs, try to do stimulus, huge rescue packages. I don't think it will be enough to prevent blow out (even 2008 bail outs didn't save the market from crashing), and/or that it would cause hyperinflation. I also believe that the crisis will be used as an excuse to introduce central bank digital currencies - so the whole rules of the game may change, where pricing things in dollars is very different.

>So it means inflation comes from more than just wages and wages can go up and not impact the market.
The first part of that sentence is true, but the second part is not
Inflation does come from more than just wages, it's the total aggregate of input cost price increases, and wages for workers is one of those inputs
Wages can go up as long as they are going up relative to the output of the economy
In other words, if supply goes up while demand goes up, this is ok
If wages go up, and supply remains the same, then prices go up - inflation - you have more dollars (wages of everyone) chasing the same supply of goods, this makes the price go up

I'm going to pick up a pizza for take out, should I feel bad for not tipping despite me literally driving over there to pick it up and paying $40 already for 2 large pizzas?

Whos in the wrong here?

Keep in mind, im paying forty dollars, for two pizzas. There is no service involved, they get paid an hourly salary to make my pizzas. I am creating a job for them by ordering this pizza. They are not serving it to me, they are not cleaning my table or filling my drinks.

Are they entitled to a tip?

This feels like October 2022 when the market rallied on that insanely hot CPI report. The market determined that was the top for inflation and pumped.
This is probably the top for earnings. Analysts think this quarter is the earnings trough but there is no catalyst for earnings to reaccelerate. The market is starting to suspect that, so that's why these pumps are getting faded and will soon go deep red

Ok. That's the same point the bobo you originally replied to was making, so I was a bit confused.

There is some small meaning to portfolio size, however. All the 4-5 fig fags can dump their whole load into random options plays and know that they're just gambling a few weeks pay. Once you break above 1-2 years savings, risk management becomes more important. When the portfolio gets larger, you no longer have that ability to instantly reload and gamble again. Age is also a factor in this.
So there's a slight difference between expectations there, which may help in understanding why different anons have different ideas of which plays are good or not.

yeah I know he did I was just piling on I thought it would be funny

I think it's almost impossible to equate trading success with trading skill.
The only skill for trading that I believe is useful is the ability to create a thesis on a specific event/company and come up with a plan to make money off of it.
I could care less if someone makes a random 2000% options play. I'll listen to advice from someone who has a clear thesis.
Thinking about the anon that suggested shorting SBNY like 6 months ago

you know I recently learned just how poor third world countries are. cuba's average monthly salary is like 87$. Ukraine is 500$, russia is like 900$. Syria is like 70$. It really makes me feel good that I was born in a first world country because jesus those fucks are poor, 5 figs to them is like 7 figs to us.
