BTC v. ETH for altcoin pairs? Can someone explain the pros/cons beyond volume?

ETH has faster and cheaper TXs. Many exchanges also support direct ETH pairs, meaning you won't have to sell for BTC to buy another altcoin.
The only pro of doing BTC would be if the altcoin you want to buy does not have a direct pair with ETH. However this is quickly outclassed due to 50 USD transactions and long confirmation times.
