things went bad when Bear Stearns closed two funds in summer 2007 and lost billions
then there was constant ticking lower until Bear Stearns itself went bust and had to be taken over by JPM
then there was some optimism 'ok that seems to be over, better times ahead' until things started deteriorating in August and then Lehman and AIG went bust and then a lot of other players were in trouble and there was no credit and everyone started selling to get some money to pay off debts and then they banned short selling which took away further liquidity and drove the markets down
