What do you mean by "silver is money"? It isn't used in international trade. It isn't used as a reserve by any government. No official currency is made of silver or backed by silver. So in what way is silver money today?

You could say "silver has been money for most of human history" and I would agree. You could say "silver is on its way to being used as money again" and I would agree that such a thing is very possible in the future. You could say "silver is undervalued and is likely to climb significantly in exchange value in the near future" and I would agree with that also (hence my stack). But to say "silver is money" doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps you could explain?

It's not used or even recognized as money by the unwashed masses, but it is. It stores value, it's fungible, divisible, stable, etc. What people call money and use for transactions is actually currency, not money. It's illegal the same way not reporting to the irs everytime you sale something in a yardsale, ebay, or Craigslist is illegal. If you sale or buy enough to or from a company they will report it to the irs and the irs will expect you to report it when you do your taxes. If you sale me a 1oz gold coin no one is going to expect that to be reported. If you trade me a 1oz coin for goods or services no one expects thats to be reported. Also capital gains tax only applies to profit you make on an investment. If you buy an oz of gold for 2000, sell it for 2100, you get taxed on the 100 not the whole 2100, and that only goes into effect after any losses are deducted. So say you by 2 ozs each 2000 for a total of 4000. You sell one for 2100 and the other for 1800 in the same year. That means you have a loss of 100 and you don't pay capital gains because overall for the year you didn't make any profit that can be taxed.

Not exactly. You'd pay 28% (not 25) on the *profit* from the sale. So if you bought for $1k and sold for $1,333k, you'd pay 28% of $333, equaling $93.24. If both you and the buyer are honest and dilligent. I doubt any sales the size we make would ever get reported.
The idea though is that you not sell and leave the PMs to the kids. Then it falls into the categories of estate tax (federal, which has a comically high deductible - $12M - so it's not likely anyone here will ever worry about that) and/or inheritance taxes (only in IA, KY, MD, NE, NJ, and PA). This means the heir could end up paying nothing in taxes (in the other 44 states) for receiving the PMs, paying CGT only when selling. It is important for an heir to get the property formally assessed, as that will be the basis for determining profit if/when sold.

What should REALLY bother you is that you must pay capital gains tax on the increase in the dollar value of an asset that is purely due to inflation. Even if there has been no REAL gain, as in inflation-adjusted gain, you pay tax on it. So you are actually paying a tax on the amount the government has fucked you out of by its fiscal crimes. The government steals the value of the money you hold by diluting its value through inflation, then taxes the increase in price on your assets due to the loss of value of the dollar, calling it a gain.

The US Treasury literally prints money, and, on its own discretion, issues notes that the Fed must honor with loans of new money. So actually the US government DOES control the issuance of USD. The only USD that is not issued under direct control of the Treasury is that which is created by the lending practices of commercial banks, which is controlled by the Fed.

We can argue about the finer points or if specific things like cars might fit the definition but gold and silver are pretty much the moneyest things in existence. It doesn't matter if you can buy slop in a shop with a chunk of metal or not, although I would agree that this ability is desirable.

Seems like you are completely missing the point fren. The premium exist BECAUSE they aren't minting nearly as many ASEs as they should.

>>55605011
I believe it's worded in such a manner that government minted silver should remain affordable (i.e near spot price) for US citizens at all time. Which is so typical of clownworld, since the exact opposite is now our reality : the US gov minted silver is the most expensive availible worldwide.. after Mexico's Libertad, which produce like half the silver worldwide, another clowny worldy irony.

And i'm asking because when we look at the chart it's clear the law was respected up until Gibson was promoted into office.
All the coof doom speaking made americans very fearful, and we see right when the coof started, the US Mint ramped up the production from 1.7Moz to 2.8Moz.
Then it's stood up there. And superposing the premium chart over it, it's clear as day that the demand was still there when they decreased the production. But since half less ASEs were hitting the market, the premiums inevitably skyrocketted.

What i find interesting as i just notice it, is the single data point for Jan-Feb 22, where they minted 5Moz this month, while every other surrounding dot is in the 1Moz (or below) range.
This was right when the Russian invasion started. Which of course, with fears of WW3 breaking out, spiked the demand for PMs, but then *poof* no more coins!

But maybe it's simply that most ASEs are minted in the first month of the year, which would be make some sense logistically speaking (we can see a spike each first month of the year).

Affordable is kinda ambiguous, but near spot price less so. Too bad the mint doesn't sell them directly because then they'd be responsible for the fremiums. As it is it can be argued that it's the coin shops price gouging or whatever (assuming the mint prices their bulk orders reasonably), but they too are just adjusting price to demand. I know it's not the spirit of the law but maybe it still kinda sorta fulfills the letter of the law which is why they can get away with it. Still weird no one even tried suing them? Ideally the law would say they have to be within a few % of spot to retail customers or something to that effect.

Twenty years ago they were probably releasing tons of F.R.I.E.N.D.S coins and bracelets and various trinkets.
Who gives a fuck about it now? All went down the furnace, probably to cast Family Guy and Beavis ugly coins.

And it probably was this way for the entirety of history. This is why you can still find and collect millenias' old silver coin, but can't find any trace of the goyslop of the period. And believe me, it always was a thing. But instead of TV shows and funkopop consoomer stuff, it was medals and statuettes of people of reknown, like idk Captain Cook or General Lafayette.

How do I know when I go to sell if I am losing money or not?
Like if I buy a silver round today, and go to sell it in 10 years, how do I know the price hasn't gone down since I bought that exact silver round.

This seems to get more difficult when you have multiple of the same round. Like how do you know how much you paid for each round? It's not like you differentiate them.

Is this a stupid question or am I missing something?

>> No.55612165

>How do I know when I go to sell if I am losing money or not?
You should have been keeping track of how much you paid for each item, including shipping and any other fees.

>how do I know the price hasn't gone down since I bought that exact silver round.
Look up how much they're going for now, and compare with your spreadsheet/database.

>how do you know how much you paid for each round?
Take the total price and divide by the number of rounds.

>Is this a stupid question

>You should have been keeping track of how much you paid for each item, including shipping and any other fees.
How do you actually determine this with tax and shipping when you order multiple pieces + accessories?
For example pricing I usually order multiple coins ($20/ea), air tight containers ($2/ea) and say tax 50cent. Now say I ordered 4 of everything plus a silver bar ($30)

$20 * 4 = $80
$2 * 4 = 8
Bar = $30
Tax = 50 cents

So is the best way to do it 80 + 8 + 30 + .50 = 118.50
118.50 / 5 = 23.70

And assume you paid $23.70 per coin?
Like that makes zero sense to me because all coins are different prices so you can't really do that idk I suck with math

The Denarius was around 3.9 grams at around 98% purity at the time.
For simplicities sake, let's just assume 4 grams of silver.
That means Judas betrayed Jesus for 120 grams of silver, which is 3.9 ounces.
So only 4 ounces of silver is worth betraying the Son of God for. Many of us have WAY more than 4 ounces I hope.

Frogbro, are you around? I've been busy and haven't spent much time online lately but didn't retire from /pmg/ or anything. I hit an estate sale yesterday and for a total of $60 bought all in the pic, the antique coffee grinder was $45 and I'll flip it for ~$200 or more, book was $2 and worth around $25 but I'm keeping it, and then I got 26.8g of sterling including a nice old pair of Norwegian guilloche enameled earrings plus 4 grams of hallmarked 14k gold jewelry (and a 2.2g pair of unmarked opal earrings which I think are gold too), all of which cost just another $13. Was kinda surprised to find the gold as I didn't get to the sale until an hour after the doors opened, but I guess the competition wasn't trying very hard this time. Happy hunting!

Yeah but that's not taking into account the value that silver could have traded for in that era,I remember an anon making calculations half a year ago in these threads but basically judas was probably offered ,fuckin guesstimate of 30k in today's money ,so not just a small amount ,again the threads were a long time ago and I never screencapped it

The US Mint & The Silver Eagle Conspiracy
Here is a 3 part series laying out what is going on at the US Mint and how they are actively breaking the law by not producing Silver Eagles to meet demand. Show this to anyone who doesn't think they are not trying to keep you from buying Silver or keep its price from flying up.

Cull Canadian Maple bought from Apmex.
I still wonder if it was some kid who did this or a pissed off girlfriend did it for revenge on some poor guy's stack. It was definitely done on purpose.

I bought silver between 2008 and 2010. In 2012 I traded 25oz (1 5 and 2 10s) generic bars for an AK. I definitely got the better part of the deal.
