Look for agency jobs where they pump out wordpress websites. Get a portfolio built, and you can find an entry level web developer job making wordpress sites for companies. Going to be real, the job is shit and not fun, but you can support your family off of it. Potentially also parlay it into an actual software engineer job if you enjoy that aspect of it, but would recommend you build out a github as you work for the agency. It's how I got my start.

Both, back what I was starting out I used to use genesis themes as a base, or ithemes builder. Not idea if those are still relevant or not. Did mainly the front-end development and worked and extended plugins to make the back-end do what I wanted. By the end of it I could start from scratch and build everything out. Took me two years to get to the point of hacking out my own implementations point.
