Honestly, just put in the work. Save money, spend it on making a home film, repeat until you get better and build an audience. The directors who make it big at a young age are insanely lucky, either through connections or nepotism. You can still live a great life as a director/cinematographer, but realistically you'll be doing things like advertisements or marketing materials.
