this is happening to multiple friends of mine. They got spoiled by crazy salaries simply because they "code" and they are now being voluntold to return to the office. At the same time their companies are cutting back big on expenditures. They think they're too good for normal wagie life and have started interviewing at other companies, only to be turned down for requesting raises over their current (too high) salaries

How long until software is automated?
I write code and design circuits but I need to be in the office and lab everyone in a while to build and test prototypes. 100% WFH is hard, and isolating and not that fun at the end of the day. Hybrid is where it is at since you still get to work from home when needed, but you can ensure your job won't be outsourced since you still have to be nearby.

because the writing was on the wall for years now. software has one of the lowest geographical barriers to entry among white collar careers. Yeah it's hard and mostly full of autists but the same shit was true about most engineering fields. And you know what happened? A huge influx of people and immigrants flocked to engineering and the salaries stagnated for 10 years. And yet when comparing average IQ between majors comp sci students consistently score similar/lower than most of those in engineering and physics and math. The FED money printer spoiled all the autistic guys, hope you enjoy the millions of ipad zoomers studying comp sci right now who only care about money
