Hi

>>55306330
>What's the memismaticists opinion on doing this? Does it "damage" the coin?
Unless it's a coin with an at least somewhat substantial numismatic value then I wouldn't really care, generic bullion rounds and washington/roosevelt coins would be before my cutoff. If you're doing it to silver dollars or fancy premium rounds and anything more substantial than that don't expect me to pay full price though.

If you're so worried about tarnish why don't you guys just buy gold which can sit for millenia untarnished?

Well unless you're playing around with it all the time, silver wouldn't be that reactive in the right conditions. Air-tight environment or one of those anti-tarnish strips will keep it fine for years. It only happens rapidly if you're fondling and leaving it to air out all the time.

I'm just discussing methods to get rid of tarnish in ways that are gentle to the coin. In the past I did very horrible things to some of my coins before I wisened up, but nowadays I just give them an iso/acetone wash and put them in caps. Some coins I buy have PVC damage or might as well have been up someone's butthole for all I know. I don't want that to spread when I buy lots in a bag.

anon upthread is right though, it doesn't matter on cheap coins or straight bullion with little or no numismatic value.

I regularly stick cheap coins in a rock tumbler to clean them up. Destroys them from a numismatic perspective, but the only ones I clean like that are already so messed up it doesn't matter what I do to them. On really corroded or dirty coins, cleaning them is the better choice than leaving them in trashed condition.

If you've got a coin that's been faked a lot, having a bit of good tarnish on it may be a selling point because the fakes will either be clean or have suspicious tarnish.

Found them panning in my river. One is magnetic and the other has some greenish (Cu) stuff going on, but seems rusty + encrusted.

as for air tight- that might be impossible. it's old wood that's been slightly warped. at their best they couldve been water resistant but air tight? not likely. i could add seal or maybe puffed leather gaskets to keep the look. but at best it's more of a hope than anything.

I'm getting scared for realsies on the lack of silver, however:
Apparently some dude with big bucks went absolutely everywhere in my city -- from the shittiest pawn shops that sell silver at a 300-400% premium, to all the banks available -- asking for silver bullion on all of these places (especially silver Libertads).
The most concerning thing about this dude in particular is that I personally find it hard to believe someone has the free time to do all of that in a single day -- even when having a fast car to go everywhere. Much less have the fiat neccesary to buy ALL THE SILVER in ALL THE BANKS of this city, and maybe the entire state too.

I ponder, just how rich does someone have to be in order to buy that much silver, and why?
Though, like I thought earlier, maybe the local cartels are buying silver en masse because the digital Mexican peso will come this or next year soon. So once physical cash is gone, the only medium of exchange that isn't tracked is PMs.

I asked everywhere as well when did all of the banks and pawn shops got their Libertad stock sold out. All of them said it was on the same day around March (they refuse to tell me the exact date).
Though I could also assume it was a team altogether that bought everything, all at once, on the same day. Yet, like >>55308315 assumes, a local rich NEET has the entire day to just do that -- and rather quickly if he has bank accounts in all banks around the city.
>>55308315
Right?
Kinda impressive, ngl. But I can no longer buy Libertads locally, so I will have to cross the border and buy American silver instead.
The ones without tourist visas/green cards/U.S. passport cards are absolutely fucked, however. They'll have to settle with 400% premium jewelry if they want to "invest" in silver.

Anyways, all of this happenings in Mexico are an absolute bull run when you notice the country is one of the biggest silver miners worldwide -- yet there is barely any silver bullion in the country.

Junk silver is sold by face value times a factor if you buy in any quantity. Nobody even looks at individual coins. I buy it by the bag and there is everything from slicks to almost UC in the pile. Big boys don't give a flying fuck about whether or not junk silver has been cleaned. I can't even imagine what a junk silver dealer would say if I returned a coin because it had been cleaned.

Besides, I don't plan on selling. By the time my silver comes into use, there will be no such thing as "spot".

Coins rarely ever get "dirty", especially silver. That's the metal itself naturally reacting to trace chemical particles in the air. All you're doing is a temporary solution, just scraping off the topmost layer of metal that didn't react to chemicals. It'll still tone down the line, only now it looks like shit.

This is why I will not touch anything like them, if the federal government comes to seize and ban trading silver and gold, those junk silver coins are going to be hard to move even as a coin by coin basis, worse will be it as bullion but that's another matter.
>>55309303 Carrying a premium isn't the same as numismatic value, people buying those peace dollars and some morgans are going to find out the hard way that the FED has rights to those coins and will be seizing them to melt or store into a strategic reserve, so have fun trying to trade with that shit and not getting snitched on for reward money during hard times. P.S. during the times when gold was illegal to own over a certain weight limit, people made gold rings in different weights in order to trade with people they knew, and had jewelers make some as well so they could barter under the table. Buying silver junk coins is basically overpaying for what you might have to melt down and convert into another form to trade.

So the first one was easy enough (at least to figure it out). It's a 50 Reichspfennig in Nickel. Kinda odd, since German currency only was in use here during the third Reich, and this is the Weimar version. Did they keep on being used during the Reich?

Maybe gonna give this a try. The second one is still totally encrusted. Seems like Cu is way more reactive than Ni, or it's older. Currently soaking in an Vinegar cleaner, let's see if that helps or if I fuck it up some more. There might be a 1 on the front, which kinda makes sense since small denominations tend to be Cu-ish in Europe. So theoretically, it could be antique, but it seems too round and flat for being really old. Wouldn't guess much more than 100 years, but as said

It has been explained loads that depending where you're from you will get better gains from gold than silver. Also platinum and palladium are wildcard metals as they have historically never been metal before. Same goes for other rarer metals like osmium.

I'm feeling lucky today, so instead of playing lotto, i played ebay lotto. Won an auction for 3 asian coins from a frog granny who's selling few old crap (emptying her deceased mom house?).
And lo and behold, i see a $1 guangxu among the coins.
A very expensive coin, who's being faked to oblivion lately. So i don't have my hopes too high, but what if...
At least, the seller hasn't the profil of usual counterfeit coins resellers.

Since i'm not very good at identifying genuine from fakes, i thought you could maybe help me on this one?

It's supposed to be this coin i think :

there is speculation that silver could possibly rise dramatically in relative value to USD during a currency collapse situation, that is conceivable within our lifetime. there are many reasons to believe this can happen and it's not a bad bet to make as the inverse(it dramatically losing value) is nearly impossible, so worst case scenario you just had savings for a while. there isn't much of a reason to own more than 500-1000oz of silver unless you have a very good way of storing and protecting it in a place you will be at for a very long time.

gold is better for actual physical storage of value merely due to size and weight, there just isn't as much potential for a rapid growth that silver has. platinum/palladium don't have the historicity of gold and silver, so they are more difficult to predict. something like platinum would be harder to get rid of in an economic collapse situation than gold or silver, though the economy collapsing that bad isn't really likely at all.

if you know what you're doing as far as getting legitimate metals and you are willing to take a bit of a risk, germanium is probably your best bet for assured rapid growth in relative value in the next decade. good luck getting rid of it if the USD hyperinflates.

platinu has been used as coinage since the 1850s i think in some places. palladium is def a new comer but platinum is pretty distinct despite looking like silver/palladium at first glance. its density is way higher compared to silver and so is its melt point.

osmium is cool but out of being rare for the sake of being rare its not really good for anything?? i mean, its almost like its so rare it prices most people out and means it will never have anything other than a very niche market

right now stacking patinum is a no brainer if you ask me. the trifecta has always been silver < gold < platinum in that order; since gold is more expensive than platinum right now and platinum being rarer i think at some point platinum will creep past golds value or get close to it at which point i will swap platinum for gold. could be wrong but i feel pretty solid about this

Honest brainlet question:
What difference does a 5kg silver Bar Make to an equal amount of coins.
Also dont you just buy atleast some „outliner“ like platin, palladium etc?

>> No.55314347

>>55314262
I'd say this. both a 5kg bar and ~160 1Oz coins have advantages. Very simple a big chunk of silver to save lots of wealth at once, for big trades and lots of coins for smaller trades. You don't necessarily want to shave off silver from your big boy bar, maybe neither do you want to go trough hundreds of coins to make a large trade? Yet even coins were pied in the past. Best answer, get both

For unusual stuff maybe get each of a kind so you know exactly how it looks and feels in your hand. I thought about buying atleast one of every low premium junk silver coin, then again I've a catalog

Sure, but then it is officially "cleaned" and the numisfags will denounce you. If you are going to clean junk silver, which does not have any practical downside, might as well make a good job of it. Yes. And that's true with many collectible things.
Generally I absolutely do NOT recommend trying to turn a profit with PMs unless your a dealer who can get away with marking up to sell and buying at a discount. That takes quite some doing. I buy PMs for two reasons: because the individual piece is beautiful art or represents some touchstone in my life, or as a hedge against financial-system calamity. About 6% of my PMs (by item count) are generic hedge against calamity. The rest is pretty or sentimental.

ASE premiums are high because the US MInt has an ass-backwards business model for getting their coins into the secondary market. Originally, the silver bullion for Eagles was sourced from the Defense National Stockpile. In recent years, the supplier of blanks for ASEs has come from ONE SOURCE: The Sunshine Mint. What this means is: the US Mint doesn't refine its silver into bullion, and contracts that work to private refineries & mints to manufacture blank planchets used to mint ASEs. When was the last time that the United States Assay Commission convened to verify the quality of silver coinage btw?

Anyway, the tl;dr

>Be the US Mint, bureau of the Treasury Dept.
>Close down the US Assay Commission
>Find way to sell off silver from National Defense Stockpile during the Cold War
>Establish the Eagle Bullion Program in 1986
>ASEs initially minted from defense stockpile
>Oh shit, stockpile is depleted
>No refining & assay capabilities within US Mint system
>Let private enterprise supply silver planchets
>US Mint strikes the blanks into ASEs & AGEs
>Here's what, let's set up a markup regime
>Freshly minted ASEs are sold in 500 coin Monster Boxes
>Have network of Authorized Purchasers™
>Initial markup of spot silver price + $2.50 per coin
>Authorized Purchasers™ break up Monster Boxes of Eagles or sell them further down the supply chain... with their own markups
>Secondary retailers buy Monster Boxes... or tubes containing 20 coins each
>Secondary retailers sell Monster Boxes and/or tubes... at an even higher markup
>Consumer Joe Sixpack buys ASEs from local dealer at $15 above spot
>Seigniorage is a helluva drug

there are pretty much too many in people's hands to really do something major nationwide, without some other major escalations. it just doesn't seem realistic. look at the stats for the retarded pistol ban they tried. they're thinking 10-40 million "pistols" in citizen hands and they could only find 250k people who were big enough faggots to let them know that they had them. and that's only crap pistols. how many people does the government employ that are willing to go door to door for their pathetic salary? not nearly enough.

Gun rights are already won in the court system, it's a matter of time. If you've noticed the overall trend, we have been smashing them for years other than the AWB which was very temporary. There's a difference between the actual image, and the information about the image stored locally.
Neither has to do with exif.
The image array is the way it is. The device where you view it can locally store the orientation. This is mostly a phone thing, as they can be held any which way, but PCs can do that too.
Here it is truly rotated.

As long as the numismatic hobby is alive and you're getting good deals then you're safe. US coins especially have very rigid value points and most aren't subjectively priced unless the coins are four figures in value. Numismatic coin flipping can very well be more profitable than stacking imo.

Be aware that coin shops will probably only pay 60-80% of spot price for your scrap. I have only ever used 1 refinery so you may get better rates elsewhere but mine will pay 92% of spot price for the silver content of batches larger than 100oz. Basic rule is to pay as little as you can get away with, and never pay more than you can easily get back by selling the good stuff individually online or in bulk as scrap. Time isn't free so I shoot for a $10/ozt asw average but you may want to start with a 50-60% of spot price target.
