So like 40 years from now you “own” the house (while still paying rent to the government, aka property tax) just in time for you to die of old age.

>> No.55281482

Own nothing and be happy?
I'd rather pay 2000/mo (where the fuck do you live?) and have something I actually own than give money ad infinitum to a landlord.

Mine is in administration at the aforementioned school district and was a teacher for 5 years there before the district paid for her masters so I'm pretty comfortable sending my kids to that school. At least our egregious property taxes are going to a good cause (her payroll and retirement)

I was going to argue something along the lines of

But there's actually a pretty long list of decent places with no property tax whatsoever.

>liechtenstein
>malta
>monaco

And a handful of gulf states as well. So I guess if you truly want to "own" your property outright with zero taxes, your choices are

>gulf state

Yeah the rule of thumb is to budget in 0.5-1% of your house value each year for repairs. So on my 500k house I budget 300/mo for maintenance to cover shit like roof and HVAC. Most people don’t take this into account at all

Anyways this thread is retarded, owning is wayyyyy cheaper and its an appreciating asset.

That is fair. Knowing that fact, and since taxes aren't exactly voluntary, it's then up to you to decide if the services the government provides in return for that tax revenue is worth it to you. If not worth it, vote with your feet and move.

Personally, I'd say mine are. At least property taxes. Government admin at the state and county level where I live is utterly dysfunctional, but at the local level it's very levelheaded and straightforward.
>roads are plowed right when it snows
>schools are excellent and admin/faculty pay is some of the best in the country (great especially in my family situation)
>extremely robust public transit system especially for the US
>Decent social services though I'm not a poor and don't need them
etc. But it's really up to you to move to where you're getting a good value for your money based on the services you use

>> No.55282189

>>55282153
the government should be providing that from the freemmoney they print in order to prevent themselves being guillotined by the local population. but instead they've gaslighted people in to paying property tax (essentially perpetual rent on something they've bought out right)

society is such a fucking scam from top to bottom

While I agree at face-value with the point you're making... property taxes in particular are almost entirely locally-sourced. And are overwhelmingly earmarked for education. Your property taxes aren't going to the infinite money printer federal government, they're largely going to your city/town/neighborhood. Even state income taxes don't generally go toward your municipality. THAT'S the fucking scam.

The federal government can print all the money it wants; states/municipalities can't. Not to mention government at all sizes is so over-bloated and inefficient that billions could be cut and little to no difference in quality of life would ever be felt, in fact it may even benefit.

So in short I'm not really even upset with paying property taxes if I'm getting good value for my money, but what does piss me off is how that money is so quickly pissed away. At every level of government.

I'm considering running for local office when I exit my startup. Would love to exact some kind of change at least in the area I grew up in and live now.

>> No.55282879

Mortgages in my city are about $3000-3500 a month, not including maintenance, repairs, property taxes which bring that figure to 5000 a month.

I just rent a condo for $2000 a month instead, renting has been the winning move this year given that property prices cant appreciate any more for the next few years.

Renting kinda sucks, rents can go up double digit percentage, you have to deal with external events like owners selling or evictions, you have to wait for landlords to fix things.

That being said I would rather rent than enter debt slavery for a house that the government could take from you with the stroke of a pen

Turkey has shittier infrastructure, worse healthcare, financial and political instability is magnitudes worse, harsh winters, hard language to learn when most of the population doesn't speak English, non-western culture no matter how hard Kemalists larp as Europeans.

house is nice and the long term etc but is a real ball and chain unless you’re somewhere very in-demand. if you have/want to move it is real pain. the moving/escape money has to be there always too. renting is hit and miss and you miss out on those sweet, sweet zestimate increases. but, you can leave at the end of the contract, no strings. also no maintenance worries providing your landlord is sound, if not move. lol

for what its worth there actually are homeschool organizations so all the kids in the same area can interact with eachother. Not that I'd recommend that anyway as it kinda defeats the purpose. They could just meet friends through other activities like sports.
