There is a perceived authority figure (or multiple) telling them to buy and so they do.

The price is going up a lot to where it can't be ignored and so they make an emotional purchase. This is legit 9 out of 10 buyers.

Almost no retail buys when hype is low, price is undervalued, can stomach and not second guess themselves while accumulating while price ranges which will sometimes put them at an unrealized loss temporarily, and patience is needed to wait for parabolic expansions to realize any significant profit.
