The content was controversial so there was no way he would get enough funding of any sorts.
Plebbit might have a similar userbase at first, because it's currently the only way to have a completely unseizable yet always reachable community with full ownership of it, but it won't die out because it has no servers, it's pure p2p and the web domain is decentralized on ethereum (ENS).
Also the sub owner's node is ultra lightweight because it's just text being seeded, and as more people browse with the app (seed) it it gets faster and faster. It's perfectly scalable, just like torrents are.
