low iq question because in "how to invest" articles/tutorials i read they don't seem to answer the mechanism behind how shit works.

you're supposed to invest in the s&p500 or whatever for 30+ years. your investment accrues interest and you have enough for retirement when you're in your 60s or 70s.

but what if all the businesses that were in the s&p500 when you started investing are out of business? i don't understand the mechanism by which your money is likely to grow a lot in the long term. the only way it seems like it could work is if there's a payout and reinvestment period every month or every year or something to that effect.

for example even as certain businesses in the s&p500 fails, *most* businesses in the s&p500 will moderately grow every year. so at the end of the year your investment will have grown overall. then you take that money (which is greater than the sum you previously invested, because it has grown) and invest it in just the s&p500 again, meaning you're not putting that money back into stocks for businesses that failed and dropped out of the s&p500 the previous year.

have i gotten it roughly right conceptually? and how do the failing businesses get tracked and sorted out? is there a guy doing it for you or just some program/algorithm?
