I like my job. Currently a graduate but working my way up to senior role with no management responsibilities I’d get £50k. It’s a pretty comfy job with not much in the way of stress.

A team leader role overseeing a team of ten would get me about £60k, but I would basically have to do my job plus a lot of additional responsibilities meaning it would double my workload for not much extra pay. I’d have to do this for at least four years until I could be considered for being a proper manager, which would get me at least £80k. Beyond that is director level which is £150k plus. Obviously that’s very desirable but difficult to achieve.

Middle managers - is it actually worth the extra hassle to get your foot in the door?

I think you’re lucky. I’m moving teams on my graduate rotation and my boss (a middle manager) is having to take on my entire workload alongside covering for another middle manager who left. Poor sod is working like 60 hours a week. I said I would help him out with my former caseload until he can find a replacement but by no means did I have to offer that.

What you're referring to the free market is actually state capitalism where a small group print the money you worship out of thin air because of over leveraging.
This money only exists because of people going into debt because the entire currency is a pyramid scheme slowly falling apart.

dunno, perhaps if you have the ability to move beyond it after a period into upper management. if you don't and get stuck there then it would probably be better to be stuck as a senior without all the associated bullshit of being middle management, that is if the pay between the two levels is not very different. The other thing that happens is over time you end up bored at whatever level you are at as it becomes easy, you've seen it all before, it is not challenging. in that situation all the bullshit associated with middle management would be a nice change and a challenge and not boring. sometimes as well, once you've mastered a level it gets noticed that you would be more valuable dealing with the bullshit as you have the XP and the company itself gives you the ultimatum of up or out.

Middle management is great if you're trying to barely do your job and skate by with a higher than average paycheck. I've been in middle management and you really don't do anything. You're not high enough to make actual policy but you're not low enough to get stuck with the grunt work. Your basic job is to enforce some bullshit policy someone states away made up and will be gone in a few months.

It's Hell if you're trying to get to upper management or executive level. You generally get stuck with a location you can't really do much with due to constraints and you basically need to work fifteen hours a day doing every position (while also not being seen too much, or they'll think you're bad at delegating).

Depends on the team that you get. It can be the easiest job in the world if your direct reports know how to self-manage and get their work done without much hassle. I honestly couldn't tell you what my Director does on a day-to-day basis besides just ask people for status reports which he funnels up the management chain.
Alternately, it can be nightmarish if everyone is incompetent or you don't know anything about what they do. I know a VP who reviews every merge request for the dozen or so applications teams below him because the developers are dogshit and have production issues nearly every week.
