Pro tip: the market will never go down again. I know this because I plan to short the VIX next time it goes above 30. In the meantime I am taking out small VIX futures shorts on every little pop like the one we had today. The plan is foolproof you see. I will continue making small daily scalps in anticipation of the big move that by virtues of me being ready for it will never come. The thing about VIX futures though is that they are always in contango when they aren't pumping so my short scalps are guaranteed to work out as long as I hold a few hours or days at most. The scalps are with so few contracts so even if VIX futures pumped to 100 (they won't) I wouldn't be liquidated. So there you have it. To keep me from making big money on a large short from VIX 30 or 40, the Bogs will have to allow me to get away with scalping small shorts at every opportunity. It's the easiest money I've ever made. The only upset would come if a whale shorted the VIX at a low price and the Bogs could make more money liquidating that whale than they would lose allowing me to sneak in a large short on the VIX spike. Either way heads I win, tales the Bogs lose. I'm basically a genius and the bull market is now locked in

Options are a scam for retail because the market maker for whatever option you want to transact will never take the side of a trade where the retailer has positive expected value. If you're buying you will get quoted a price with negative EV. If you sell the ecpxact same option you will also get a quote with negative EV. If you see a price with positive EV, try to get the trade at that price. You won't. The only way you'll get it is if the market moves while your limit order is in and the EV goes from positive to negative. The market makers use computers for all their transactions so you won't just slip one through. The only way to make money long term buying or selling options is to be very good at timing either market direction or equally as good at timing the future width of spreads (in the case of multi leg strategies). If you think I'm wrong then try your luck long term and see how it works out for you

You can trade options on futures. It's better because you can trade 24/5, tax treatment is better and no wash trades. If you don't like worrying about theta, delta, etc. then you can just trade the straight up contracts. Futures is good here too since you can get as much leverage as you want and you can go short as easily as you can go long. Also if you like trading VIX, there are no ETFs that replicate the experience of trading the actual VIX contracts themselves since the ETFs really give you access to a constant maturity pseudo VIX future which doesn't actually exist

Futures are better for day trading, and you can make really good money with them. For reference, 1 point on the S&P is worth $50 per mini. So even getting a few points on a couple of contracts each day is a solid income. They're better for people with small accounts because no pattern day trade rule, and there are a lot of futures prop firms that will give you an account to trade with after you pass a combine. Most brokers have a day trade margin that's much lower than the exchange maintenance margin. The only time the exchange margin comes into play is either between 5 pm and 6 pm on weekdays and over the weekend.
