Is there a way a contract can liquidate some of its crypto for chainlink to pay for chainlink services? The contract converts some spare change to LINK to pay for CL functions call?

Yes but it all depends on how you're going to facilitate the transfer. You can for example as a contract developer maintain a chain link functions subscription separate from your contract, and implement a swap function in your contract which trades the users Eth for a link reservation in your subscription for one functions call. You could also use a dex to swap between eth->link but it costs more gas, is more complex to develop and has a worse user experience

thanks. Didn't chainlink themselves put out a comment that they'll add a functionality similar to this in the future?

I think I know what you mean, but I don't recall the details. It could be that you can pay in the L1 token of the chain instead of the LINK token, but probably not in general erc tokens

yeah you’ll most likely need to give the contract access to ETH and have it refill LINK periodically with buys. The best way to do this would be keepers, or add a check when an oracle action is needed to ensure that LINK balance is at a certain threshold at all times or refill
