54888474 No.54888474 [Reply] [Original]

This ain't my board and I don't know shit about money or investing, but I beseech my fellow anons for some advice... Sorry for the tl;dr, but please r anyway.

I'm in my late 30's and I have a little sister who just turned 20. Really, she's more like a daughter to me. Most precious thing in my life. We're poor as shit and I work night shift doing back breaking labor for barely more than minimum wage. It's the only job I could find around here, but it pays the bills and keeps a roof over our heads. She's legitimately a really good kid, not at all like the rest of today's "youth", and I don't want [this] to be her future... I want to break the cycle for her.

I want to take maybe one or two hundred bucks (or as much as I can) out of my bi-weekly check and put it into some kind of savings account or ... SOMEthing, but like I said, I don't know jack shit about this stuff. I plan to give it to her somewhere around her 25th birthday, and I don't want her to know about it until then. I don't know how much I can save in that time, but I hope it'll be something at least, and I'm going to try and impart some better fiscal responsibility in that time so she doesn't blow it all on video games and Dr. Pepper...

Any advice?
Hope it goes without saying, but it needs to be a solid enough thing to actually still be there when the time comes.

I'm about the samge age as you and I was looking for a long term investment for when they all turned 18 when I found radiant. Pick your poison: btc, eth, bnb, arb, usdt and some others. Loan out half and stake the other half yearly. Check in when you deposit to redelegate rewards into the other pile. Compound interest is amazing. Very little risk.

They're going to make me a manager soon, so that's a bit of a bump... I'm in bumfuck nowhere ghettosville though but our car is about to fall apart and thankfully the place is (the only place) in walking distance. Realistically speaking, this is as good as it's going to get for me, but it doesn't have to be that way for her.

dca into an index fund(s), some well diversified international equities index/indexes, and maybe bitcoin and/or ethereum as a small crypto hedge

don't expect returns in five years, the macro situation is an unfolding shitshow

It's really easy, I'm pretty new to crypto myself. Just use a trust wallet, it's a bit pricey to buy off but you won't get much better from exchanges and you'll get a transfer fee if you do. Or maybe thats just me because the AUD conversion fucks me.

Just open the website through the trust wallet and connect your wallet. It will cost a couple of dollars to activate the smart contracts but once you do everything on the website just works. Use the dashboard to see income from deposits and the manage button will show you your locked fund rewards.

I recommend doing BNB if you use the binance chain and ETH if you use the arbitrum chain. That way you have the currency required for fees when depositing. ETH on arbitrum must be sent through arbitrum networks, so if you're worried about transferring stuff between wallets, stick to BNB.

Since you're new I recommend putting some of your investment aside into BTC and holding it in a cold wallet just in case anything happens.

Be careful where you store passwords, if you lose them, you lose everything. If it gets hacked or stolen, you also lose everything. But it's yours and only you can be the one to lose it.

>Be careful where you store passwords, if you lose them, you lose everything. If it gets hacked or stolen, you also lose everything. But it's yours and only you can be the one to lose it.
All my passwords are long alphanumeric passphrases memorable to me, which I store in a KeePassXC database behind a long alphanumeric passphrase burned onto a LUKS-encrypted DVD with a different long alphanumeric passphrase disguised into a stack of old junk discs.
Probably a bit overkill, but, you know... quantum computers and AI scare me.

This is about the smartest thing you’ll see in this thread. Not saying to stay away from crypto entirely, but just very small bits of basics like BTC and ETH here and there. But for the most part stick with the index funds since it’s something you don’t plan on her having to get into for a long time. VOO is a good start, and couldn’t hurt to place a small amount into stuff that never moves (QYLD, RYLD, etc.), but generate a monthly yield you can use to put into Vanguard ETFs. Maybe at some point she’ll get wise to it all and take the reigns for herself.

Also, try and steer her into a direction that has her being more financially sound. She’s in her early 20s, so she’s got all the time in the world to build good saving/spending habits.

Listen, OP, if you want to invest it's really easy.
You open an E-Trade account and just buy Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (ticker: VOO) every month.
You just do that for 30 years and don't look at it and then you retire.

I would recommend a "safe" portfolio since you said you don't want to gamble - of course, what is safe? If you're not in the US, a bank account isn't that safe. You can store physical cash, though, depending on your currency is, that has a significant risk of being inflated away to nearly nothing.
In terms of stocks, people recommend the S&P500, though that does carry a significant risk nowadays. If you have $100 per month to work with, it might not be the best investment, the reason being that the S&P500 is mostly a retirement account, and people are retiring en masse now, thus causing them to try and sell those shares, which can make the price plummet by a lot. For someone to sell for a trillion, someone also has to be able to buy it for a trillion, and millennials don't have a trillion in cash (just illustratively).
In terms of crypto, your safest best is BTC, which might not do those extreme returns of shitcoins, but those returns are fake anyway, and 99.99% of them will go to 0 - you might as well burn the money. You can also buy physical gold, though an ounce costs $2K, and with such small amounts, you'll lose a relatively huge amount to the premiums sellers charge.

I wouldn't put it like that. Every investment has a risk and a return. If something has a higher return, it's by necessity more risky (since otherwise, people would have already piled into it and raised the price to the "fair" level). The converse isn't necessarily true: nothing has a good return BECAUSE it is risky. There are plenty of poor investments, like outright scams, that are insanely risky and have a very poor return. There is an "efficiency" frontier at which you get the "most bang for your buck" of investments that have the best risk-reward ratio. Currently, risk and return are very much mispriced in the market in general, which, however, also opens an opportunity, since you can buy certain things for less than their "fair" value. One of these, and this is my opinion, is BTC, because people want to flee fiat currencies, but, by and large, haven't gone over to BTC yet. That doesn't mean that BTC will replace all currencies, just that people don't recognize it as a reserve asset (like cash in a treasury). It won't do some insane move like x100 in 6 months, but it well might do x10 in 3 years, which is a ~300% gain per year.
What you really have to avoid is losing all of the money for which you sweat and toil, which does happen if you allow yourself to be lured by completely unrealistic promises made by both shitcoin shills and shills for "legitimate" defi platforms and tokens that nobody has ever heard of.

If you want something more risky, you can also buy XMR, since I'm seeing that the BTC network is clogged up again. It won't necessarily appreciate more than BTC, the superior return is that it's less liable to collapse under some black swan event (I'm saying "black swan" because people don't expect it because "it can't possibly happen", not because it's actually so unlikely that it can't possibly happen - people don't know what's actually likely, they just express personal incredulity) like those BTC ordinals are seeming to do right now. XMR is more like cash, in that it's anonymous and can be spent easily anywhere, and can't be inflated to oblivion at a button press.

save for a couple of months and then start an account in some stocks or some shit, and buy some known stocks. Just get dividends and keep buying other stocks for her. Eventually it'll be something, and even if it goes down hopefully the dividends will be enough to cover the losses. Regardless, whatever happens, if they go up or down, you'll still would've avoided the fate of the "dr.pepper n games".

That's one idea. The other just maybe buying gold for her and storing it. My issue with this is that gold can be stolen, so i'm not sure if that's good. That, as well as you'll constantly have eyes on you. Maybe keeping gold in your home is dangerous where you live. However yes, buying gold is probably even better than stocks as it retains its value, even if you hear bullshit like gold and silver will lose their value.

Ultimately friend, some people will tell you to send your sister another place to live better. Which if for example you're living in Brazil or Iraq or something, and you send someone to live abroad in the US/EU, your sister will live better, but she'll just become a silly whore. It'll be better for you if she starved instead of becoming a 'modern-day "woman"'. So just think about it, Try to make it better for her, but maybe don't lose sight of your goal, think what you really want and what each step gets you and takes away from you.

You want to save up enough cash so that you can live for three months without work. Having that security blanket is important for protecting both you and her from potential disaster.

After that, divide up your savings into percentages. Decide on a percentage for 1.
her (or your) education (ideally profitable skills).
2. Snp500 / a wide range of stocks.
3. 10-15% into bitcoin or Ethereum. Don't fuck around with other coins unless you know what you're doing, you'll just get scammed.
4. 5% physical gold / silver. Buy the coins, get them delivered to you, hold them in your hand, then hide under the bed. This is very inefficient at your income level, but is just a super-emergency backup. Don't hold precious metals if it's likely to get stolen / you live in a high crime area.

Honestly anon, the biggest barrier to her future is your own current level of learning. You NEED to be reading 10 pages a day. Look up books that will teach you useful shit, you can get all books free from the /lit/ sticky. If you can manage 10 pages a day, it will change your life and hers far more than any financial decision you make today.
