The point is that rich men are not going to enter the kingdom of Heaven by virtue of being rich. Nobody can enter Heaven through wordly means, such as wealth, status, etc. but only through God. You could be a dirt poor, destitute hobo but if you aren't godly, you aren't getting in.
Therefore, it isn't strictly impossible for rich men to enter Heaven at all - so long as they are righteous and godly. The problem is that in order to become rich in the first place, you're very likely to have had to engage in some form of sin. So modern understandings of this passage are putting the cart in front of the horse.

Most people's morality is only limited by their options. When you're excessively wealthy, this is no longer the limiting factor.

If you think about it, it's actually a dunk on poor people. Because of financial limitations, they're never really tested morally as much as a wealthy person is.
