Well it actually did already stop rolling during the repo crisis when they tried to get out of QE and the car started rattling
But the short argument for why you can't bear high yields when there is a lot of debt around, is that debt raises the cost of money. You can kick the can down the road by going into more debt and refinancing cheaper but actually going 'back' (delevering) becomes harder and harder. Also 5% or 7% is not an arbitrary value, if interest is that high it starts to consume about half of the federal budget. If they don't want to cut spending at that point they will have to borrow MORE (larger deficit, hence more money printing) and then you're really in trouble. It doesn't mean collapse, it means you're in real trouble.
My argument was not that the ball will stop rolling, it's that they will cap yields to keep the debt pile manageable. I'm not arguing collapse, I'm arguing global Japan. I'm hoping for that, actually. I'd hate to see global Argentina
