Plan for 6 months. That's of course, the best case scenario, since the average family is living paycheck-to-paycheck, not with $15k+ just lying around. During the height of the crisis, the largest cohort of unemployed were those out for more than 27 weeks, and it's not even close.

Also, we saw inflation in consumer goods (offset by asset deflation), so monthly expenses rose. People behaving "responsibly" with their finances lost their shirts, daily. And they still owed. 99% loss would have been a mercy.
Oh, and that's without mentioning the people who were robo-foreclosed, had the house sold, and still owed money.
