actually in my opinion, a catastrophic situation in the US treasury market (a default longer than let's say a day) would probably result in catastrophic inflation not deflation. At some point, the gov would have to step in, but it would be way after the damage has done. There might be an opportunity to buy treasuries for pennies on the dollar somewhere in there, but after that all the big treasury holders will be panic dumping their supply for US dollars. So right off the bat there will be a shitload more US dollars in the market because those dollars are probably going to come straight from the printing press in an effort to prop up the market. Now what will that cast of characters, the combination of US banks, Japan, and even Ch*na do with those US dollars? That, I do not know. But, if you can predict that, you would probably make money in that scenario.
