Argentina used to be in the top 20 global economies. It had a first world standard of living and native industries based on production of heavy machinery and even domestic automobiles.

Their import costs have gone up. One would think that they could compensate by raising the price of their exports, which are mostly foodstuffs:

The tried-and-failed solution is to just print money. It's honestly not even any worse than what everyone else is doing, since everyone is printing money to buy energy that they can't get. It's not so much that the currency is hyperinflating in a vacuum, it's that it's hyperinflating in relation to something they can't get, namely energy.

If you're into this finance shit, it's like a fixed-floating swap: the amount of energy that you can get is "fixed" (at least not arbitrarily printable), and your demand is "fixed" (in the sense that you need as much as you need), and what you can use to pay for it is floating. If you increase the money supply by x10, then the price of energy will just go up by x10; you're just redenominating energy. Well, not JUST redenominating it; redenominating would serve no purpose. What you're really doing is stealing everyone's savings to pay for the energy, and the redenomination is just the means by which it is done. If people have no more savings because they've been wiped out by inflation, they can't pay for anything, thus demand goes down. The economy also collapses because someone's demand is someone else's supply, i.e. if nobody buys goods, then the people producing the goods also go out of business, but hey: the demand goes down. Universal poverty. And since material wealth derives from material energy, and the problem to begin with is the lack of material energy (because of pipelines going offline, wells going offline, trade restrictions, wars, and all that shit), it is really this dearth of supply that's working its way to the consumer through inflation. Inflation is the mechanism through which governments, if inadvertently, communicate that they can't supply the goods. You could just have shortages, and that'd communicate the, well, shortage, just as well, but since it's government, it has to shittify everything by an additional layer of inflation on top of that - it wouldn't be government if it didn't.

Argentina has always been a volatile economy, ever since they came out from a military government and got into capitalism. There's actually a saying amongst economy majors: "The theory works, then there's Japan and Argentina".
Thing is Argentina pretty much lives in a perpetual cycle between somewhat ok richness and the most abject poverty. This is how it works: Right wing politician gets into office and applies Friedman to a T. Public debt soars sky high but you get to say to the rest of the world that you're a first world country. The poor masses get fec up with this and elect a left wing fella into office. This fella applies Keynes to a T and goes austerity mode. Now Argentina is back to poverty. They get fed up and elect a right winger and so on. Rinse and repeat for the last 50 years.
